Most people just use Terminator Bases or Small infantry bases. There is no set size for them though. Generally a small infantry base is good enough.

okay cause i wanted to do something a little more intensive with the objective and its kinda hard to do on the small infantry bases.

Go with the termie base if you need the space.

I always love when people put effort into objective markers, so for me; as big or small as you want them.

800 brethren and 2,000 other personnel were expected to reach Crows World within no more than 12 hours. They never arrived.

You can go small, such as making an abandoned banner or ammo supply, or you can go much larger, such as what I did here, mounted on a Dreadnought base.

I used the back banners from my ironclads to make some objective markers. I also used a bunch of other stuff I had lying around.

Example:

A terminator DS beacon and a fantasy flag.

There is a whole lot of possibilities if you look through your bitz box. It can be as simple as a jumble of spare weapons or as complicated as a whole scene (as what Valkyrie did).

Hope this helps.

Here it is! Pic kinda sucks...been meaning to take a better one. I've touched it up too, but you get the idea. It's basically some of the armor I didnt use, the pilot with some minor rearticulation, and I combined a power pack thing to the spotlight to give it some extra flavor.

Personally I use a base sized roughly between the standard infantary base and the termie one for my own objective markers. There's no real defined size, but it mustn't be too intrusive to the game-so in my opinion Dreadnought size bases are pushing it.

I use 40mm bases for minor objectives and 60mm for major ones.

My SM minors have crates with a small banner (sgt type) with the chapter symbol on it.

My eldar ones are small bits of eldar stuff (little statues or banners/whatever). The major is a statue of Faolchu (falcon), the god whom the tank is named for (it's an egyptian Horus model).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

There is no single worldwide ruleset for tournaments. You would need to check the rules package for any specific tournament you are looking to enter for any requirements on objective markers for that event.

As Insaniak noted, there is no one standard size.

I've seen 25mm rounds fairly often, but 40mm round bases seem to be the most common. They give a little more space to model something cool. The cool resin objective markers Adepticon has made and gives out every year are 40mm in size. I've also seen poker chips used in a few places, which are about 40mm.

I just use coins for objectives. Simple, very flat, and very easy to see.

I agree with the Small Infantry/terminator base statement, I like good objectives as much as the next guy, but at a certain point it starts becoming more a diorama and less just something you're fighting over.

An objective is a point so you can use pretty much any size providing that there is a definite point to measure from and that it doesn't stop models from getting too close (an 8" wide area of impassable terrain doesn't make for a good objective!)

I made one before out of a random mighty empires tile i got out of WD once, and as people have said before, there is no set size and most people dont mind the size as long as it is not stupidly large as Scott-S6 said.

Either the small infantry base or the terminator base.
Money works as well. Especially if you add a few twists to the game.

I think any size up to and including the 60mm base (dreadnought) is good for an objective. I did make sure to make another marker for the opponent to use if they didn't have one the same size though. As others have already done so I guess I could post some pictures of one of my markers.

This is a 60mm base by the way.

Looks like I need to update my gallery as I've made a few after this one.

I usually make most of my objectives on 40mm bases, but that's mainly because it gives me enough space to make an interesting little scene. I've seen great objectives on both 25mm and 60mm bases though. I think if you do a nice job, your opponents will appreciate it no matter what size you use.
