I'm considering an Imperial BFG fleet centered around two three-ship Cruiser squadrons, each with one Dictator. I'm going with a theme fleet. I want each ship to have the 6+ Imperial Prow and Torpedo launchers. I also want to maximize combat efficiency, and I want to maximize ease of construction from the Imperial Cruisers box sets.

Say I buy two Imperial Cruisers box sets and from the pieces inside I assemble two Dictators. With the pieces left over I could most efficiently assemble two Gothics.

Now say I buy two more Imperial Cruisers box sets. What could I build from just the pieces in those box that would mesh well with my two Dictators & two Gothics?

I'm thinking two more Gothics and two Tyrants. I could squadron up the Dictators each with two Gothics and have a lot of Lance firepower with a well timed Lock On Target. The Tyrants would be a separate maneuver squadron putting their 45cm Batteries to good use.

These ships, plus a 100 point Admiral, would form the basis of my 1500 point fleet.

Thoughts?

First, welcom to Dakka! It is always nice to have another poster in the Naval forum .

I think you have a pretty good idea, it is one I have been tossing around myself. Having those 3 ships squadroned will ensure that you will still have some decent firepower to kick out even when braced (which will happen often). The biggest drawback is that there will be some conflicts with special orders, as in some situations you will want to reload ordnance at the same time you want to lock on. However, that is mitigated by the fact that you will also need to reload torps. Another good thing is that all 3 ships will move in unison if you go AAF, which can be a good way to jump into combined bomber/torp range of an enemy (it's a nice shock tactic).

Now, as for the rest of the fleet, I would load up on Swords. They are going to be a nice source of mobile firepower, which you will need to counter Eldar fleets since you will not have a lot of long-ranged firepower, even if you upgrade the tyrants.

Thanks for the reply.

Does everyone play with the Limited Ordnance rule form the 1.5 FAQ?

Pretty much, yes; those rules are now official. However, the 1.5 FAQ is out of date. The new ordnance rules were incorporated into the reprinted rulebook, available as a PDF from the GW site. The most recent FAQ is the 2007 FAQ, but there is a new FAQ that is set to be released soon (it is currently under final review, from what I hear). Horizon posted a link to a draft version in this thread:

I recommend you take a look at it, it is 30 pages long and contains some important changes.
