Hi!

I'm new here at DakkaDakka because I've seen that there are still some 2nd Edi Veterans

We played our last game already a long time ago, therefore this question:
When do troops declare on what target they want to shoot?
Do I declare all targets at the beginning of the shooting phase (first unit: select target - Second unit: select target etc. -> First unit: shoot - wound - Second unit: shoot - wound) (Similar as for close combats)
Or do I shoot with each unit seperatly (first unit: select target - shoot - wound etc - Second unit: select target - shoot - wound - Third unit etc etc)?

This is important because some targets are covered by other units at the beginning of the shooting phase and can therefore not be chosen as a target if all declarations have to be made at the beginning of the shooting phase.
But if every unit shoots seperatly, I can eliminate a unit in front first and then shoot on the unit in the back because it became visible.

Thx for your help!

So long,
Lardoc

I assume your asking for the 5th ed ruling not the 2nd ed one? Well in that case;

You choose a unit of yours
Choose a target for the unit
Measure range and check Line of Sight
If in range, fire those models with LoS to the target
Complete the required 'to hit', 'to wound' and 'armour save' rolls
If out of range the unit forgoes its shooting (it can't shoot this turn)
Move onto the next unit of yours.

Haha no, he's talking about 2nd edition, hence his thread title.

Anyway, you shoot with each unit separately. You take one of your units, declare a target, shoot, wound, roll armor/field saves, resolve effects. Then you go onto your next unit that can shoot, and so on.

I had someone at a tournament swear blind that you select a target for each unit at the start of the shooting phase so you can't take advantage of killing a unit covering another unit.

However, this hardly matters in 40k now. The worst that could happen is the unit behind the covering unit might get a cover save.

Well, two answers - two opinions. Does anybody have a source/rulebook-quote?

Thx!

AFAIK you can shoot in whatever order you want. You can blast one unit so that another one behind them can see a new target... just like 5E
