When you take one of these character upgrades, do you pay the base cost of one of your unit's models and then pay 85pts to upgrade to snikrot/zagstruk, like you would if you upgraded an ork to a nob, or, do you simply pay the 85pts to get the model in your mob? the entries in the codex say you may choose to have your mob be led by one of these characters instead of a nob, but it does not say that you upgrade one of your kommandos/stormboys to the character. I don't want to be giving myself an unfair discount (or price hike, for that matter!)

To purchase those characters, you do not have to purchase a nob (Or another model for that matter) to field those particular characters. As they do not say "You may upgrade a nob (Or boy) to this character for xx points". Meaning there is no need to charge yourself points, except for that character.

If the codex entry says you "upgrade" another model to the named character, then you have to buy that first model first, and replace him. If the codex entry just says you add the model to the squad, then you're not replacing another model. The Kommando entry does make you choose between Snikrot and a Nob, but Snikrot's not an upgrade to a Nob.

So in short, you pay for the Kommando, then pay the additional 85 pts for Snikrot, i think its worth it considering he has "Twin Linked Arms"

Nope, there is no paying to upgrade the character, so you do not have to pay for the kommando and snikrot, just snikrot.

To reiterate you have two options: A) Purchase a kommando and upgrade it to a nob or B) Purchase Snikrot. Same goes for stormboyz and Zagstruk.

"Instead of a Nob" means that you include Zagstruk/Snikrot in the same way as any other nob, in this case, by upgrading a boy.

I do not think so... It doesn't say you UPGRADE a boy to snikrot ... it says you add snikrot... it's a bit different...

It does not say that you add snikrot. It says "Instead of a Nob, one mob may be led by:"

Well, I'm sorta glad to see that this is unclear to more folks than just me. The only reason i question paying points for a Kommando and then more points for snikrot (aside from the obvious pinching of pennies) is that the entry does not ever say to upgrade a model. It says you may choose to have Snikrot lead your mob instead of a nob, and that appears to be more of a limit, meaning you can't have a nob and snikrot (which is too bad really...)

You have snikrot *instead of* paying for a nob. Paying for a nob requires you to buy a Kommando then upgrade.
Snikrot is instead of doing that - it is 85pts in total, no Kommando required first.
