After reviewing the forge world website, I have taken an interest in purchasing a thunderhawk for a very large apoc battle. Economics aside, is it worth putting in an army?

For the point cost, it's not that impressive actually. More fluffy than practical for a game. The Turbo Laser destroyer is probably the only reason you should get it though, but then again you can get a cheaper one on a Titan.

I have a Baneblade. I literally counted how many times it was in battle with markings painted onto it's hull (4 times over the some 5 odd years I've had it).

I understand it won't be used much, but in terms of how effective it is IN a game, how does it do?

It's not bad at all. It's not the killiest superheavy, but still pretty damn killy. Think of it as a flying, huge capacity Land Raider that's nigh impossible to shoot down. Most attacks will need 6's to hit it (either shooting or CC) and it's got 3 structure points meaning it won't go down easy.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.
New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts. |

Basically think the Storm Raven, but a tad bit more durable with a heavier gun.

If your going to get an overlay model that will rarely be used in games, albeit those games will be pretty memorable, wouldn't it be better just to make it out of plasticard from one of the various templates out there? GW Super Heavy kits are far too expensive, wheras though it'll take a good deal more effort to make it, you'll save a lot of money just making the thing out of plasticard and adding your own details as you like. =P

I do agree, if you dont work at GW, buying a thunderhawk would be a regretable move.
But to answer your question, thunderhawks are immune to melta and as said previously, nigh impossible to shoot down. Do not expect it to perform poorly

Super Heavy kits are more army centerpeices that have been given rules. They should be treated as such. Buy them with the intention of not using them, and spend time building and painting them. They're display pieces. Occasionally, you get the bonus of getting to use it in an Apocalypse game.

Also, the ability to puke out dreadnoughts, assault marines, bikes, vanguard vets, or whatever else strikes your fancy is quite a bit of fun as well.

As an owner of a FW Thunderhawk I must say that the building, painting and displaying of it is the most fun. The problem with using it in games is that a flight stand is required. The model is simply too big to be plunking down on the table. I assure you that attaching a stand to it is no easy task. As for in game its like many apoc vehicles: they look cool and are tough but never seem to live as long as you think they should.

I just built a Thunderhawk out of 5mm foam board and have yet to use it, I think its first showing will be the 19th at a RTT game. I will post results and pics.
