The only way I've successfully used to get a decent white is many very thin layers on top of a white undercoat. Even then the results can be a bit hit and miss.

What a horrendous colour white. I was going to do space mairne in a cool white/blue scheme but thats not going to happen because I can't get the bastard colour to work. The only success I've had with kommando khaki (kind like white) is to mix it with white foran under coat then the actual coat in normal kommando khaki.

We're watching you... scum.

The only effective white I have seen is space wolves grey. Its more blueish, but at a distance it looks white.

Try not using the crappy paints that GW makes, that might help abit

I've noticed over the years that the pigment load of their paints has steadly gotten worse as time has gone by.

Just base coat it with a good light gray to white car primmer and be pacient when painting on the rest of your colours

6-7 thin layers.
White is like this. ALL of them (paint maker makes no difference). It has to do with the pigment densities and flow quality.
It has been this way since I first used white on my eldar (white armour plates, metallic blue mesh back in 1989).

To get a decent white on my 501st sm, I start with a white primer, black wash to get the blacklining, touch-ups with astronomican grey then AG/white and finally two or so coats of white.

The only way I've been able to do it is to paint Astronomical Grey first as a base, then simply add thin layers of white over that.

Probably work

I just spray white till I get the level of brightness I want. I'm all for stuff looking good, but white's a pain. Bleached bone doesn't look too bad, but I typically wash it to grime it up even more, not the other way around.

I always go for the astronomican grey and 6 - 8 very thin layers of skull white option for doing my BT shoulder pads.

The way I do it is a layer of shadow grey followed by a 50:50 mix of shadow grey and space wolves grey, followed by pure space wolves grey and finally multiple layers of thin white. It's worked well so far

Mix your paint 50/50 with water then give it a few layers. This thins it out for you, and also allows you to put it on evenly across large areas. It may not be 100% even with the first layer but don't panic. Each layer will cover up any slight problems with the last and in the end you'll have a perfect looking skull white. I've even been able to put skull white on top of pure black primer, it just took a whooooole lot more layers than normal.

I'd also recommend thinning all of your paints in this way as it really does make them look better. There's only a few situations where I use straight paint out of the pot and then it's because I'm looking for the effect it offers.

Paint the desired area grey(Astronomican or Codex) and then layer multiple thin layers of white.

Bleached bone goes fine by itself if you are just doing small details. if you are doing large areas paint the area white first and then layer the Bone on.

you coule solve the entire problem by bascoating in White, but you will need to paint any areas that will have dark colors with Chaos Black before painting them.
