How effective ARE drop pods? I play chaos, and the ability to deep strike my units sounds REALLY appealing, especially with dreadnoughts. Not to mention you get a little AV'd gun to do something after you drop the guys off.
So yeah, how good/effective are they? I know it depends on the army's play style, but I want to know how effective they are in all-comers lists.
Also, why wouldn't you always put your dreadnoughts in pods? There's like no reason to ever make them walk across the board >.>

They are not that effective. When did you go chaos? Do you still have your ultramarines?

The CSM codex contains no Drop Pods, but there are FW ones, with rules different from that of SM Pods.

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

Indeed, I meant the Deathclaw.
GW allows FW models in GTs, so why not considering them.

OP:
They are awesome.
Fill them with Dreadnoughts or Combi-melta sternguard and reach out and touch tanks on turn one.
And if your opponent reserves everything they're hardly playing an aggressive game, are they? I use them in every game with my Space Marines and never regret it.

Vanilla Drop Pods are one of the best DT options. They can have massive anti-horde (a 5,- LBT), and can become the most ridiculous force ever.
It's called the DDM. It's 125 points of Deep Striking Melta Walker.

I'm not talking about dreadclaws, people. I know about them, but my group doesn't allow IA stuff (Because a certain friend made a completely broken all-tank list using IA)
Seeing as monster rain was the only poster who said anything relevant...
Yeah, that's what I mean! I would never want to put tacticals in them or something. Things that need to get somewhere in a hurry and blow crap up would be my main volunteers
Asherian- I've played chaos since the beginning Ultramarines is what I did with AoBR. Never went past that.

Don't be too hasty there. I run three pods; one with a Venerable Dreadnought with a Heavy Flamer and Multi-Melta, one with 10 Sternguard with 4 Combi-Meltas and Vulkan(or a librarian, depending on the situation) and one with a Tactical Squad with a melta and combi-melta. The Sternguard and Dread come in first turn and wreck house and the tactical squad comes in later in the game to grab objectives or liquefy a pesky tank. A deep Striking Scoring unit that doesn't mishap is a pretty nice thing to have around.
Oh, and in case someone wants to be pedantic, it can mishap if you scatter off the table. Don't do that.
Samus_aran115 wrote:Things that need to get somewhere in a hurry and blow crap up would be my main volunteers
Sternguard and Dreadnoughts of most flavors do quite nicely in this role. I even drop Shooty dreads on occasion, so they can get at that side armor early on.
Are you going to have your Chaos count-as Vanilla Marines?

Nah, I'll just wait until the new codex. Rumours are all around that dreadclaws will be in there. For now, I'll just bargain with my friends to let me use IA stuff.
Maybe for one game I'll really miss having those T5 troops though.

They are great for getting melta into 2d6 range, dropping AV12-13 melee walkers into the enemy lines, and... for my favorite use, dropping them into ground vehicle lanes of travel, forcing them to drive over dufficult terrain and possibly immobilizing themselves!
for 35 points, they do alot that other transports cannot.

I've been devastated by a few cans of 10 Sternguard dropping in my face on turn one. Vengeance rounds, I think they were. They'll get eaten alive eventually, but park them near vehicles and melta them to death.
