Simple question: In the council listing, the "all warlocks may buy X" or "all warlocks may choose from the following" options are a bit confusing for me. The way I read it is each warlock may choose their powers individually as well as spiritseer and singing spear upgrades. Is this correct or do they have to all take the same options?

They can take different powers as well as choosing between pistol and witchblade or pistol and singing spear (doesn't gain +1A in CC, but is a better ranged weapon in a lot of cases.)

One thing to keep in mind about all the upgrades, May does not equal Must. You may chose, means you can either chose the options or ignore the options. You must chose means you have to take at least one of the options. So by saying may, it allows you to chose individual abilities for each warlock.

So by that reasoning, Genestealers may individually elect to take scytals or not?

All Genestealers in the brood may take:

- Scything Talons................... X points

And assuming a unit is entirely made of a model named "Model X", is there a difference between saying:

All Model X may take...

and

The entire unit may take...

The thing your missing about all this, is it says in Codex Eldar

All warlocks may buy one warlock pyschic power from the following list:

Now in Codex tyranids it says

All Genestealers in the brood may take:

Notice the difference? I'll emphasize it to show you.

All Genestealers in the brood may take:

Since it says in the brood that makes it so that individual genestealers cannot take scything talon upgrades. The way it reads there is the genestealers take it as a group, but the warlocks don't. In other words it's an all or nothing thing, not like the warlocks where each individual warlock gets the choice.

On to the difference you asked about, there is a difference. By saying all Warlocks may take, and The unit of Warlocks may take means that individuals get their choice.

Let me say first that I agree with your conclusions on all accounts, as I believe that is the intent behind the wording. I disagree that the addition of "in the brood" forces a shift between being able to individually choose the option and collectively choosing the option. All it does is specify between genestealers in the brood and genestealers in general (in any brood, in any army, which is a pointless distinction given the context of the game.) I still play it so that it has to be choosen collectively as that is what seems to be the intent and what is generally accepted...and of course it's been almost 20 years since I've had any sort of english class, so I can't claim to be particularly astute in that area I am trying to help a new player with his Eldar army and I just wanted to make sure we had the interpretation correct, and knew why it was interpreted as such.

Any time it says "per model" then the whole unit must take the upgrade.

99% true for the Nid dex, but there are several instances in the IG dex where that is not a good guideline. The IG dex also shows better terminology for how they should have worded the warlock options.

Yeah, saw that. Everywhere else it's pretty clear but when you get to Sentinels it kinda goes out the window!

Unless all Sentinels in a squad are supposed to be armed identically?

No, "Any" is pretty straight forward....and if you think about it, if they just said "Any sentinal could blah blah blah for x points", then you could theoreticly upgrade every sentinal in the unit for the points cost of a single upgrade...adding the "per model" makes it perfectly clear.
