No pictures yet as I will start to collect a Skaven army this week, but my vision for the group is to be inspired by the Roman Legions of old. I am playing in an escalation league, so I will have time to paint and convert 250 to 500 points at a time. I know Skaven are one of the hordiest armies out there, but I think even they will have problems fielding 80 strong units. I will probably field all units in multiples of 8 (making each set of 8 a contubernia) and adding enough to make the individual units. But I will leave the details at each step to the army list section.
My thoughts so far consist of painting the actual units themselves in silver/rusty armor, the red uniforms of the roman legions, and I have a trial order of Skaven-sized Roman style shields in the mail (with a special thanks to Lonecoon on this forum for helping me out with those). I hope the size of the shields worked out and that I will be able to attach them correctly, but if everything went well I think I will have some fun Roman/Skaven soldiers. The slaves will probably run as the auxillaries and I will paint them as a mix of rats that have scrapped up old roman armor, unarmored troops, and captured prisoners collected from the armies I will face in the escalation league.
I will try to start using some Green Stuff and mold crests on the helmets of the champions, and try to convert each banner to the style used by the roman army. I will try to be very fluffy with this army and divert a bit (or quite a bit) from some of the official Skaven fluff. Instead of going with black, I might paint my Gutter Runners as Roman Senators (Et tu Brute?"). After getting some green stuff experience I also hope to turn my Rat Ogres into different Gladiators, but that might be getting a bit ambicious.
I will post pictures and updates along the way, but I wanted to put this on paper to truly commit myself to this idea, looking forward to some fine Italian Cheese.
