I'm in a similar boat; here's another thread that I found to be a decent starting point and gave me some guidance on something to work from:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/335557.page

It only discusses a 500 point list; but seems like it would probably be a fair foundation to branch out from- regardless of what type of ork army you decide to run.

Welcome to da ORKS!! Though for an ork army to be effective you have to have a theme. Themes are Battlewagon Rush, Killa Kan Wall, Green Tide, Nob biker Spam, and Trukk spam. Though in my opinion I prefer the battlewagon spam. It works. I placed 6th out of 40 people (#1 ork player) at the 2nd round for 'Ard Boyz. And there were like 6 to 8 ork players.

Professionals are predictable, it's the amateurs that are dangerous.

i like the dakka. any of my lasts always begins with two or three 30 strong squads of shoota boyz with 3 big shootas and a PK nob.

There ain't nearly enough Salvage in this thread!

I second what Deff Jaw said, Ork armies only really work well when built around a theme. They usually revolve around various ways of getting your Orks into CC with the enemy, either footslogging it and relying on cover and sheer numbers to have enough bodies to kill whatever is at the other end of the table or putting everything in a transport.

I guess it depends on what kind of army you want and if you're making it to be super competitive or just for fun.
