He didn't trust the machines, the same way Prince Mortarion didn't trust the winds of magic. Yet here they were, Scarus the Sorcerer sent on recon with the Plaguewind Cult at the edge of the Eye of Terror. The combination of things their Demon Prince held disdain for, psykers and machines, cast out from the Warp and the presence of their Demon Lord. Yet Scarus couldn't help but feel they would be instrumental means to Mortarion's ends.

Mortarion hadn't deigned to speak to Scarus, and did little to acknowledge his presence. Instead a Nurgling handed Scarus a rune etched key that glowed with a faint blue light and mapped coordinates on a dataslate. The insult wasn't lost on Scarus, but he was still in shock to have even been summoned by his Lord.

Scarus studied the dataslate again now, as they passed Piscina IV. Their first stop was warp jump and a raid for supplies on Forge World Corinthe on the way to their final destination...

Here is my Pledge for the Month of January 2011: A Forge World Deathguard Sorcerer. Finally a good start to my Deathguard. I'm roughly planning on a Rustoleum brown primer coat. I'm then going to alternate stipling different browns, oranges and reds onto the metal areas. I'll follow up with a drybrush of Boltgun Metal followed by more stipling of browns. I'm also going to try adding different washes to areas. I'll follow it all up by striping different whites to the armor, as I want to give these models a 'start of the heresy' look. They will all have metal and swamp basing.

I have loved the idea of a Nurgle Biker army since the new Chaos codex had come out, so here it is!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
This is the model i'm painting:

I've started by washing off the model with warm, soapy water using my wife's toothbrush. The mold release on resin and metal models can cause paiint not to stick.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I got him built. I used some cork and plastic tubing on the base, as well as sand. Everything else is just a standard build.

After I built it, I primed it with Rustoleum Brown Primer which gives me a nice base to go on:

I was working on weathering a Trollkin Thumper at the same time, and so I lightly drybrushed/stipled some Boltgun Metal on.

After that, I gave him a wash in Grypon Sepia, let it dry overnight and took another pic.

Next up, I'm going to stiple on some different reds, browns and oranges and mix in a trace amount of metals and greens to make it look like different stages of rust. I know my pics aren't the greatest, I'm still trying to find my light box from when I moved

Are you really sold on doing stippling?
Because there's a far more effective(and fun!) method available in 'flicking'. It looks gorgeous for doing rust, especially on Death Guard models.

Flicking like the canvas technique? Can you link some example please?

The tabard on the guy in the middle is the best example I can find right now, without digging through years of White Dwarf.

Basically: You use a drybrush or toothbrush loaded down with the paints you're using, when all of the models you're going to do the effect on are basecoated.
Then you just run your finger along the top, aiming it at the models and call it a day while you let the paint dry.

If you opt to do that method, here's some color suggestions(and it's important to slightly water the paints down and have a fairly protected setup with the models in them to avoid messing up walls, carpeting, etc of your home. Trust me on that one! ):
First, put down a Blazing Orange.
Next, flick a layer of Bubonic Brown on.
Finally, flick a layer of Dark Flesh on.

Those three tones are the most common in "rust" looks, and end up complementing each other quite nicely if you let them dry in between applications.

It's, as I said, quite fun and looks amazingly nice for Death Guard models.

Ah cool, it's just like the canvas technique. I'll give it a go, thanks!

There can be backflick.

i love that model and your paintjob and having read through the posts ive just learnt a new way of painting rust(i suck at stippling).

Well then, let me give you another way to do rust too!

You can, using Elmer's Glue(or whatever the white school glue used for little kid's art projects is called in the UK), heavily watered down and applied to the model make a neat little trick.

Apply the Elmer's Glue, then while it's wet put some table salt on the model. Shake the model, let the Elmer's Glue dry a little bit then apply successive washes of rust colors over the patches where the salt stuck. The salt will cause it to kind of "trickle down" and give a rough, more natural look.

It's kind of iffy though. If the salt grains are too big, it looks terrible.

That's the technique I'm saving for the vehicles and bikes.

So I got some painting done last night. I wasn't quite sure where I was going with this, so unfortunately my Forge World Character Model is my test model as well. What I'm going for is lots of rust, so I wanted to use different oranges and browns to really mix it up and give it a nice patchy look. Of course, all the colors I really wanted to use (Vermin Brown, Fiery Orange, Etc) were all dryer than Joan Rivers. That kind of limited my palette, and made me want to jump ship on GW paints even more. Those pots are so messy, paints dry out so fast...but that's a rant for another time.

So I did the first layer on the armor, using Astronomicon Grey, in a striping pattern. I'm going to build up to white eventually to signify remaining PH Death Guard armor. I then painted the fleshy bits Tallarn Flesh and washed them with Purple. I was wondering what I was going to do with the cloth and banner, and then decided to go with flayed human skin. So I gave them a coat of Khemri Brown as well as the skulls, then washed the skin parts with green.

The white really pops on the model, and I like it. I was trying to make it more recessed, for areas that hadn't been weathered. But I think I'm going to try and bring that out a little bit more, because all the orange/brown tones of the model just blend together. I'm also going to work some really dark green into some of the armor trim.

I still haven't decided what to do with the base yet either. I'll need to hit the base itself with black, and see where I want to go from there.

Please pardon my terrible pictures. It just hit me that i had my light booth set up right next to me when I took these. DOH!

I finally finished the Sorcerer....back in January. I forgot to update. I have a long way to go with this army, and I've decided to reel it in and finish off more of my Orks.

Very punctual ;-) Though seriously, it looks good. However, are you completely done with it? I only ask because the banner seems somewhat bare and detracts from the rest of the model (at least for me).

Actually I haven't finished the banner, I forgot about that part. I'm going to go for the flayed skin look when I get back to it. For now, it's onwards with the Orks!

How were you going to do the Flayed Skin?

Because I've got some suggestions for that, if you want.

I was going to base it all dark, then paint patches in in different colors leaving the basecoat as the stitching. But I'm always open to suggestions!

667th post! That's a milestone for me

I've gotten back to painting my Death Guard, here are some WIP pics. I've gone back and forth on the paint scheme for a while, I wanted them to be corrupted but still retaining some of the original Legion color.

I'm hoping to churn a bunch out, I'm shooting for an April 21st date to finish painting and basing 1850 points. If I have time, I might be able to get a display board done too.

Nice. The rust looks really grimy and real, and I like the purple as a contrast color. The shading on the possessed leg in particular looks really good.

I need some opinions. I wanted to put on armor chipping, but I don't think my colors are working out.

I used Scorched Brown and highlighted Rotting Flesh, and the highlight just blended into the armor. So I used a light grey instead, and now it looks like bad camo.

Suggestions?

I took some time out to work on my Skaven Army, getting it to a playable level. I sat down last night with the Nurgle Dread, and tried out NMM. It's on the plague balls stuck into the sarcophagus as well as the round grill in front. I also worked some more highlights into the Death Guard. I could count these as done, but I still see hours and hours of painting I could still do. I need to cut myself off, or I'll never get this army finished!

It was really easy, the purple is Leviathan Purple Wash over white, highlighted with a bit of watered down (really watered down) Rotting Flesh. The green is white primer, Gryphon Sepia wash and a watered down Reaper Master Series HD Olive Green. I love the Reaper paint series, and I'm currently crossing over.
