I bought myself FF's Talisman as a Christmas gift and have a rules question.

Characters can collect slain monster cards as trophies and then turn in 7 strength points worth of monsters to increase their strength. What about monsters that are not on cards, ones you encounter because they're on the board or other reasons? Can you use them to level up or only the ones on cards?

I can't cite a page but have always played those "other reason" encounters (like the guy that guards the bridge) as NOT contributing toward "leveling."

How are you liking it so far K_K?

I haven't played the FF version, but in the older editions we only counted the monsters on cards, not stuff on the board.

That's what I figured since it refers to swapping cards for leveling up.

I've played before but not the FFG version, hoping to get some buddies together soon. Or maybe at the Dakka Con?

It's a fair bit of fun. Plus, I am very impressed with the quality of the board and components. I haven't heard the best things about the expansions, although I haven't played any of them myself. (I really like the idea of adding characters, however.) Still, the main game is a very lovely addition to any collection and a really nice gift.

At least for the old version of the game, I believe it's in one of the FAQs that it's only monster cards you encounter through one of the decks (Adventure, City, Dungeon, etc. (Yes, this does include the Fireball spell.)) can be converted for strength points.

I was actually completely unaware there was a new version that had been released, and am quite excited to see it. How does it compare to the classic Talisman, at least in your opinion?

Well I played the first edition and then straight to the 4th.

And I think its awesome. The game is still very fun, changed in some ways for the better and I didn't notice any flaws that would ruin the game.

We played with 3 to 6 players and it was pure fun and didn't last too long to finish .

I really am considering buying all of the 4 expansions (2 small, two big ones) or maybe its 5 now?

Excellent.

That was always one of the issues with the 1st edition of Talisman...a good game could take all day.

I shall have to pick up the main game some time soon. My thanks.
