How do you do kill a tervigon before it spawns multiple waves of gaunts? Not looking for a definitive answer, just wondering how people would do it.

Well, we need to know what army you play otherwise our advice may not apply to you. You take down Tervies far differently with Orks than with Demons.
I play missile wolves as my competitive army of choice and obviously, missiles are the TMCs bane. Wound on 2+ with no armor. High volume means you drop them quickly even with a save.
Baring that, any high volume, high strength shooting will do the trick. As with anything in the game, focus on shooting something until it is destroyed and then move on to the next target. Use the weapons that are best against a given target first and then work your way down the list until it is dead or you have nothing left to shoot at it.

decent amounts of Str6+ weaponry.
its unlikely you will kill it before it drops some gaunts, but thats ok as, when it dies, it does damage to them.
