if i took a razorback, not as a dedicated transport, but to take it for a lascannon or just for some support, does it count as a troop choice then? i was curious about this for a while.

Well, to begin with. You can't take a razor with out it being a dedicated transport. A razor also counts as the FoC part that the unit you bought it with. Command Squad - HQ razor Sternguard - Elite Razor Tac Squad - Troop razor

No, you have to have the unit that can take the transport as well. That's why it's a DEDICATED transport. It's dedicated to THAT unit. It's an upgrade for that unit. Can you take a single lascannon without the marine? No. Same thing.
Dedicated transports aren't necessarily 'TROOPS' themselves, THEY count as a unit from the same slot as the unit that takes them (but don't themselves occupy a slot). Elites that take a transport have the transport count as an Elites UNIT, but it does not take up any Elites FOC slots. Heavy supports likewise.

Again, no. The Razorback is a transport, like a Rhino or Drop pod. It is not a heavy support, like a predator, or vindy. All dedicated trans have to have a troop unit "assigned" to it, but the rules don't say that the troop unit has to start the game in it, or anywhere around it. You CAN take a razorback, and put no troops in it, and have it run around with it's las like you want, but their has to be a troop unit somewhere on the board that is "assigned" to it, and that troop unit can't be assigned to any other DT. Which leads to the strategy of starting the game with your unit outside the transport in case it gets popped in the first round, or if it's deep struck you have your marines already out.
On another note, Predators are the most bang, and armor for your point buck. Outfit one with dual las, with side bolters (130pts! that's sick!). the bolters are def weapons and can fire with a 6" movement.
On another side side note. 6 marines is the limit for it's capacity, and just 6 marines (unless you've got blood angles) are a waste of pts. I've found the razor good for one thing; as a dedicated trans for a command squad. The Apothcary gives them feel no pain, and arm them all with plasguns. This is DEADLY. Also go with "las and dual plas" as your main weapon (you'll need to fabricate this, as there isn't a bit for it, but it's available as an option, If you want to know how to do it, send me a private messg, and I'll show ya. easy to do)

Buy the Razor for any unit that can take it, such as a Tactical Squad or a Devastator Squad. Then never embark the unit on it, use it as a light tank/mobile cover.

I see this rule broken a little more than I'd like. I stumbled on a game at my LGS, and a bunch of kids had like 20 drop pods on the table... I was like ughhhh running apoc? oh no, drops are 35 pts a piece and we can take as many as we want.... blah blah blah...
actually...

Uhhm...that is called cheating. In the same way as taking 10 single Oblits into a game.
So yeah...

Seconded. You have to buy it for a unit that can have a transport but nothing requires you to deploy them together or have anyone ride the transport at all.

If I follow you correctly, yes, you can just use the razorback as mobile firepower. You don't HAVE to carry infantry around in it.
However, since it's a dedicated transport, you can't buy it by itself. You HAVE to have first taken a squad that can choose to add a razorback, like tac marines.
