Hey dakka,

New sw player here, just a couple questions regarding wolf standards.

1.) when exactly during the player turn must I declare the standard is being activated? shooting phase, assault phase pre-moves/post-moves, etc.

2.) the rule states that during the assault phase that the standard is active, the unit may re-roll all 1's, that means all to hit, to wound, and armour save rolls as well, right?

Thanks for the input, all.

Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.

Haven't got a codex, so can't help with Q1, but for Q2, if it says you can re-roll all 1s, then it means just that. If it states, all 1s to hit or all 1s to wound, then you can only re-roll those.

You can reroll any "1", including the consolidation move or sweeping advance rolls.

The wold standards effects occur in the next assault phase. If you wait until the assault phase to activate it, you will not get any benefit THAT phase, but you will the next one.

So if you are in your turn 1, and you want it to activate in your turn 1 assault phase, you MUST "use" it in your movement or shooting phase.

Not that many people play it this way, of course, as thinking ahead is too hard

Okay thanks, it will come up at tourneys I'm sure. It makes a big difference for example if I need to assault into cover and roll too low, or if I anticipate receiving a charge that never occurs. The re rolling all ones is awesome, it makes terminator armour nearly impenetrable! thanks for the speedy responses!

I didnt think WG could get terminator armour? Unless youre looking at attaching WG / WL to a GH unit of course.

Yes, you can reroll difficult terrain tests as well. VERY useful. Just please try to use it correctly, i.e. the previous phase to the assault phase. It is supposed to not be such a banner of cheese....

The risks involved with anticipating the phase, rather than seeing bad rolls and then trying to say ' oh I meant to cry wolf' makes the standard a bit less cheesy. I don't want to do it wrong, so I was just confirming I had interpreted the rule correctly. Thanks.

Also yes I was referring to a wolf guard in TDA assigned to a gh pack on foot.

Assumed so Yes, TDA gets a rerollable 2+ save for a round - very nasty!

Just keep in mind you may not reroll dice when you make a Ld test (like for moral and counter attack) because those are made with 2d6, so you cant really roll a 1 (2 being minimum with 2 dice). all according to the Faq

Good to know, thanks for pointing it out! I will have to print the faq and surreptitiously slip it into my codex.

The standard also gives a small boost to the Mark of the Wolfen, letting you re-roll a 1 for # of attacks. It's pretty awesome.

Also its important to note that don't let your opponent be a douche and move from his shooting phase to his assault phase without giving you a chance to activate your standard in the case you are expecting to get charged.

You will technically need to activate it some point during his shooting phase, right at the end is a legal time, but the other guy will need to respect that.

I run into a similar issue with SoB using AoF which have very specific timing. (For example, the invulnerable save needs to be activated before charges are declared). It is usually pretty obvious when you want to use the 'power,' but just caution your opponent you would like a second to think before they move to assaults. That way if they skip it, you have grounds to back them up for a second to use your powers.
