As the title suggests do you guys feel like priests bring enough value to a razorspam army to warrant taking them? While I like the idea of the FNP bubble I'm still on the fence as to whether or not it's really needed to protect troops that are really more defensive assault troops

Ask Mercer, he will argue that Priests are absolutely needed.

Even moreso in Razorspam as your body count will be lower.

I don't think they are absolutely necessary. Look at all the other razorspam lists (e.g., SW) - they don't have FNP and do just fine without it. I would rather use those points for dozer blades, etc.

I say no, they are not needed as they come at the cost of more razorbacks.

Better to bring more guns than to preserve your small 5 man squads that pop out of them.

Perhaps at larger points value games they make sense, but I would not take them at or under 2K.

I vote no.........His points takes models away from an already depleted body count!

Just bring an honor guard, then put them in a razor?

There are 2 kinds of Dakka members: People who just think the game and people who actually play the game. Which one are you?

Priests can go absolute barebones in razorspam.
Limit squad size of all 6 assault marine squads to 5
As soon as a priests ride gets popped move him into a new razorback
30 fnp assault marines with 2 priests>36 assault marines, and the upgrade is only 20 more points over the xtra 6meq.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

I opt for leaving them out.
The troops mounted in a Razorback will disembark as a last resort or for a combined strike.
I'd spend the points elsewhere.

I'm still on the fence on whether to include them or not, fully agree that having them around increases the survivabilty of the squad however even if I only take 2, thats 100 points I could be spending somewhere else...if I take 3 then thats basically an AV13 tank that I'm missing out on. I guess it really comes down to whether or not I want to increase the ASM chances of surviving outside the razor back vs putting another AV13 tank on the field

Keep in mind that in BA razorspam, as opposed to SW razorspam, you've typically got 3 more Predator hulls (for a total of 6), which pulls points from the pool you'd be using to max out on Razorbacks.

In my opinion the extra survivability of the priest goes a longer way than the single extra razorback.

Depends on how you define Razorspam.

Pure Razorspam, which relies on pure shooting, is something BA can do, but not do well. Space Wolves can do it much better, because they have access to support from Long Fangs, and cheap durable assault support in Thunderwolf Lords that can hide, and requires no powers to support the gun line form assaults.

If you do nothing but Razorbacks and support elements, you don't need Priests. The Marines will rarely get out of their transports, and when they do, there is enough shooting to take them out easily enough, not to mention assault elements from your opponents taking them out.

If you want to do many Razorbacks, it is possible, but I would explore and plan out how you support that, and what kind of shooting you put on the table. I have an assault terminator unit running in a LRC as my support, so with that in mind, a Priest became necessary to make that brick unit viable, but you can just as easily run Death Company in a Storm Raven, or Mephiston, or many other combinations.

So think about your list, if you are only relying on 5 man assault squads, then support them with Honor Guard, who provides you another Razorback and a "hidden" priest. If you want more assault as support, there are other things to do.

Priests are not necessary in pure razorback spam, they add to your already high kill point total, and cost a fair amount of points.

Current Armies: Blood Angels, Imperial Guard (40k), Skorne, Retribution (Warmachine), Vampire Counts (Fantasy)

Honor Guard are definatly a bonus 215pts (same cost as regular assault squad with meltagun in a las plas with a preist) for a las plas razorback with honor guard then you can add chapter banner or special weapons
