Subject: Basing Help - for already painted marines already glued on bases!

So I am fairly new to this game. Painted all my Space Wolf dudes a few months back (armor is Adeptus Grey), who are glued onto all their bases. And now I feel like I should have some sort of texture on the bases. The thing is, I don't want to do the annoying task of carefully painting around 60+ pairs of legs to paint the bases. I want a no paint basing method. I realize this is slowed and backwards, but it is either this or no basing at all.
I'm thinking of gluing some kind of sand, ballast, or (organic) grit onto the bases, and then putting some snow flock on top. And then calling it a day. Questions:
- Any ideas for mid to dark brown or black texture (sand/ballast/grit), that looks ok unpainted (or somehow can be painted/dyed pre-gluing)?
- What's the best way to get that stuff to stick and stay on, bearing in mind that they won't be covered with primer and paint but only some snow later?
- I am going to have thick patches of snow, that I apply in one shot, using a method mixing Woodland Scenics snow with PVA found here.

If it were me, I would just base up, and use some blu tac/soft eraser to mask the legs, paint as normal, remove, done!
I'm leaving my bases until last, I dont have an issue with it, masking using something like the above is not that difficult, and wont take you much longer than a no painting base method in any case.. You're still going to have to be careful with whatever you glue there right?

If I was you, I would blanket the whole base in snow and maybe have a the odd detail protruding from it, like a rock (cheap and easy to find in most gardens and streets) or a discarded weapon or something.
Glue detail to base. --> Paint detail if it needs it.--> Blanket the whole lot in snow. --> Job done.

Largely, I can't think of something to bypass your conditions, unless you go with grass, GW's 'dead' grass or the Woodland Scenics stuff or a combo.
PVA, applied a little watered down, not quite milky, with a non-detail brush or tooth pick, and then sprinkle on the grass. Shake off the excess. Quick and easy, but none-to-impressive.
Your SW don't *have* to be on snow, do they?

No, but I already bought the snow.
As you guys have mentioned I could go with the simple all snow or grass with one or two rocks/other bits protruding out, but I wonder, could I get away with using dark brown/black grit/sand (if there is any to purchase), or perhaps dye/paint it before I glue it on? From what I understand of the grit, it's organic, walnut shells or some such, maybe it will suck up inks or paint if I pre-mix it? The GaleForce grit is a little too light colored for my tastes, and I have spare brown and black ink.... hmm....

Woodland Scenics. It's cheaper and folks online say it mixes with glue better than GW's...

Just find some rocks that are already the color you want them. I mean, I always assemble, convert, paint, seal and only THEN base them. You don't have to do the basing before everything else if you have basing materials that you like.
For reference, my bases look like this:
