I was looking at a pic (last page of the of the SM: codex) of a crimson fist tac squad and I noticed that some of the units have chain swords and bolt pistols. I look back at the weapon options for the tac squad and there is no such option... the chain sword and bolt pistol combo only exist with the assault squad. Now if your still reading this there is a method to my madness.

Upon looking at the assault squad they can take 2 flamers, or 2 plasma pistols, and the sergeant gets more options then their flightless brothers. But under Dedicated Transport it reads and I quote "The squad may Remove its jump packs to count as infantry. it may then have a drop pod or rhino for free. Note that upgrades must be bought as normal."

Now does this mean that my tac squad has both its own options and that of the assault squad's options (not including jump packs)
If so I can have a squad of 10 tac marines, 7 of them with chain swords and bolt pistols and 2 of them with flamers plus sergeant with thunder hammer, all in a drop pod?
Or a 10 man tac squad split in to 2 combat squads, one squad with 4 bolters and 1 Ml, and the other squad with 2 chain swords and bolt pistols, 2 flamers and the sergeant with a pair of lightning claws?

ok the second option does sound weird but it does seem posible! Now I want to know what Dakkadakka thinks...

Yes if you pay for an Assault Squad and that is 100 pts for 4 marines and 1 sergeant and +18pts for every extra marine,
and you remove the jump packs, then you can have a squad with the profile you say.

Offcourse, they count as Fast and not Troop, since removing Jump Packs just lists them as Infantry and not Jump Infantry
and also they cost more than your average Tactical Squad!

Tactical squads and Assault squads are completely separate.

While an assault squad can swap it's jump packs for a transport and become a little more like a tactical squad they are still completely different. Chainswords instead of bolters, different upgrade options, fast attack not troops, cannot claim objectives, etc.

The "upgrades must be bought as normal" part seems to have confused you - that's referring to upgrade options for the free rhino or drop pod. You have to pay for any upgrades you give the transport.

hmmm... then that means

is wrong because even after taking off the jump pack they still count as fast attack.

I don't see anything saying it's a tac squad there, but the Apothecary and banner bearer means Kantor has a Command Squad at least. The rest could be whatever - there's two heavy weapons too which a Tac squad can't have. Might be 5man command squad w. heavy weapons, a 5man non-JP assault squad with pistol/sword and a 5man vanguard squad with bolters.

In any case, pretty pictures aren't rules.

No? Tac squads can take whatever is under the Tac squad entry, Assault squads take stuff from the Assault squad entry. Keeps things simple.

Whatever it is, it's not a single squad. But going by the hands, it's a Tactical Squad and a Veteran or Command Squad.
