Sure they do...

Line up and shoot...

Shoot some more...

Shoot a bit more...

Then charge and die for the Emperor!

Now that's how you say sacrifice!

But seriously though, there are heaps of ways to play them. I use mine like how you would imagine modern troops today fighting...just with less IED's!

Some regiments prefer overwhelming force with infantry/tank advances. Others are artillery regiments that stay back from the front lines and use their fire-power to support the main front and defend key positions. And yes there are more balanced/tactically minded forces. Using stealth, traps and work behind enemy lines. It depends on the world the regiment was raised on and the style of commanding officers.

Generally reading Imperial Armor you see a few different methods the IG employs:

-Mass Infantry charges.
-Tank attack led by Baneblades and/or Russ'.
-Prolonged "siege warfare" with heavy artillery on positions too heavily defended to be assaulted by the above.
-Airborne assault via Valkyries by Elysians and Stormtroopers

Have you heard of Gaunt's Ghosts? They're mainly do the stealthy style fighting but Dan Abnet has also shown most of the other fighting styles in his books.

So far I've seen (read) them doing;

They're stealthy sneaky tactics
Airborne opperations
City fighting
Trench warfare (both using imperial tactics/wargear and more primitive versions)

IMO a good read if your interested in IG fluff as it also shows how other regiments work as well.

York/London(for weekends) oh for the glory of the british rail industry

The catachan codex shows that the catachans use alot of subterfuge and tactical planning allowing very small numbers to take out rather large forces.

One story tells of a punji trap made from a canyon, the catachan made the lid strong enough to hold when they retreated and to hold nearly all of an ork force before collapsing and sending the orks to their deaths.

Alot of the tactics depend on the fighting style of the commander and troops combined with where they are fighting.

its safe to say that relictors are the greatest army a man , nay human can own.

I have a friend who has around 20 mortars per platoon (He uses 3 platoons) and 3 deathstrike missiles to form the core of his force. It's funny but random to play against.

Imperial guard has no less tactics than any other codex. We have the choice to play competitive horde OR mechanized, which not every army has the ability to do.

If you look at it they turn from only sneaky guardsmen to tough as nails veterans. Although with

Imperial Guard seem to use similar tactics to those used in WW2; though some regiments have more modern tactics, depending on the size of the force.
