I've been having this discussion with all my friends and I figured I would ask you guys on Dakka, as the title states, what is the most played and least played army in the 40k universe?

Most played: Standard Marines Codex
Least played: I'd assume one of the following three, DH, WH, or Necrons.

DH and WH are both definately the least played, even less than the Crons, because without the Allies rule anymore, they cant even field effective armies anymore. They were designed with allies in mind, so to take it away would understandably handicap or even cripple them.
Whichever one is the most played is debatable, however it's definately one of the marine codexes (either SW or Vanilla).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Actually, Necrons, despite the fact that their codex is the oldest, are still played commonly.
Witch Hunters on the other hand...
Daemons are also not very common by me, we have one player, and he has two other armies. The only reason why he plays Daemons is that he has them for fantasy, with their square bases...
That's why I picked up my Daemons, not played a lot, so people don't know what to expect!

Other Dreadnaughts should just go somewhere and be a toaster.
Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

Hands down Space Marines are played the most.
As for least, probably DH, WH, SoB seeing as how unlike Necrons they never had an edition where they dominated and everything is pretty much metal.

Sm the most.
At my LFGS the least is DH

800 brethren and 2,000 other personnel were expected to reach Crows World within no more than 12 hours. They never arrived.

My FLGS has a descent spread, though Chaos Space Marines still outnumber everyone else, followed by Space Wolves, Dark Angels, Blood Angels and standard Space Marines all pretty much neck in neck.
We've a couple of Eldar players, a couple of folks play Tyranids, Necrons, Imperial Guard, Dark Eldar and Daemons. One or two chaps besides me play Orks.
We've single players of Tau and Daemonhunters and I think I'm the only one who's got a Witch Hunters army at the shop.
While most of the factions are represented, the tourneys are pretty standard in that you tend to see Space Marines in various colours, shapes and sizes a fair bit and the other factions a little more sporadically.

WH and SoB is so infrequently played that few people seem to even realise that they're the SAME CODEX.
Generally speaking, the most played armies tend to be the newest with a bias towards space marines, ork, and imperial guard, which tend to draw more than their share of people regardless of codex age.
