Well, I'm a Space Marine player, and I've been curious with joining three other armies: Chaos Marines, Tau, or Imperial guard. To tell you the truth, I sometimes charge my units, but I've been learning the ol' "stand your ground and fire at will." method. But, I've also wanted to join other armies! If you're a player of one of these three (or more), then could you tell me what it's like to play as those armies? Their strengths? Their weaknesses? The best way to use your units while playing them? Good units, and bad units (in your opinion)?

I play Guard and I love it. Theres a few things one has to deal with as a Guard player.

1. Your men WILL die. Lots of them. But its ok because theyre expeniblle (and used to it).

2. You'll need vehicles. LOTS of vehicles.

3. You'll need lots of models, period. So be prepared to buy a lot for a med-high point army.

But the guard are a lot of fun ^^. I say proxy the armies you want to try out before you commit. If you want a different experience, I say stay away from CSM since you already have Space Marines. But thats just my opinion.

I suggest you not go for Chaos. Currently with the exception of the Cult Troopers and Daemon Prince, they're little more than Close Combat weapon equipped Space Marines. Tau might be a good change of pace, but it's an uphill battle. Guard is probably the best out of the three as they bring playability and flavour to the playing field (something the other two have only one of).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

None of them are really "charge in" armies but of them probably Chaos is closer to it.

Actually IG and Tau are probably the polar opposite of a CC army.
