Ok I've been playing 40k for the past year and I've quickly built up three fun armies and I'm working on a fourth. A few of the other players also play the fantasy version and got me to try it out.

I got to use his WoC against Orcs and Goblins. I managed to win out in the end due to the pure power of the warriors. The marauders did not do too well, but did slow things down a bit and allowed the warriors to wipe things out. Though I was a little shocked by the warriors lack of ranged weapons. His WoC are Khorne based, so that is not a surprise... but, when your opponent is the only one shooting it makes for a different game. Also, it is certainly a different animal from 40k.

I'm probably going to start up an army for fantasy pretty soon. I tempted to do High Elf, I like the look and units... plus, I can grab them up in the Island of Blood set.
Second, but very close would be WoC. I would probably start with a battalion and go from there. But would need to pick up a spare book somewhere.
Last choice, but interesting is Wood Elves. I love their units and would be great with shooting.

Any pointers towards what would be a better starter army for fantasy.

Also, trays are not very friendly with my terrain. I'm probably going to have to make more fantasy friendly hills and stuff. Thanks.

Wood Elves are a tough army to play, both because the 8th rules just completely took away the WE ability to hide from Shooting and the changes to how skirmishers worked.

WE are an army you play because you like a challange and/or you really like the models.

WoC are a fun, easy to play army. the problem is that they are sort of Fantesy's Space Marines, everyone plays them.

HEs are another common army(largely because of Teclis Cheese and the IoB set)

with HE and WoC you could take some flak if you use the really powerful builds(Double Hellcannon, Teclis "I blow your army up on first turn and neuter your ability to counter me with magic")

if you go with WoC and HE, try to avoid the really cheesy builds(especially if you enjoy having friends) with the possable exception of tournaments.

WE will be the toughest of the armies to start with. difficult rules and will need to most models to begin(unless you go heavy with Forest spirits)

I think I'm going to run HE, so far I don't know anyone else here that plays them. I don't think we're going to be doing any tournaments with fantasy here. Not a lot of fantasy players, just something else to do. I'm not familiar with the two builds you mentioned, so I doubt I'll have that problem.

WoC seemed like fun, but probably too overpowered. I already have a few players who hate my Fleshtearers. So I think HE might be a better choice.

I'll have to get the codex for HE and read through it before I decide on it or not.

Well, to warn you in advance,

HE are another army that has some cheesy builds.

the one I mentiond is Teclis, a banner of sorcery, and another wizard with book of heoth.

Teclis is either given Lore of heavens to spam the Comet of Cassandora spell, or the Lore of Life to buff his own sides troops up. the Life lore is the less offensive build with the exception of Dwellers, but having T7 elves just isn't right.

to avoid allegations of cheese you should avoid having Teclis in your list as he is probably the most undercosted thing in the game besides the Hydra(and the Hydra can be countered with a little bit of forsight)

other then facing a tooled up Dwarf army, nothing says " you enemy magic" then Teclis and Banner of Sorcery.

Many people won't face Teclis in friendly games. That being said you can make a poor mans Teclis for a few less points minus his ignoring of the first miscast each turn.

I have 2 lists written for 2500 points. One with teclis and 1 with the knock off.

Yeah high elves are a fairly strong army in this edition.

But like people have said there are army builds that people will pass on if you drop them in a friendly game...

Any army with teclis or the book of Hoeth I pass on. Dont feel like spending half the game picking models off the table and not being able to do a thing about it.
