So while looking on ebay at imperial guard armies I came across this:
40x Cadian Imperial Guard (includes all options and upgrades), 2x Imperial Guard Sentinel (includes all options and upgrades), 6x Cadian Heavy Weapon Teams (includes all options), 2x Cadian Command Squad (includes all options and command upgrades) and 1x Imperial Guard Leman Russ Battletank (just Ebay message us and let us know which plastic tank kit you want) or Demolisher (Multipart plastic kit includes Punisher and Exectioner variants).

This is all for $211 with free shipping, and is all brand new. My question is is this worth it, and can I make a decently fun list out of this? If I did go through with it I would end up buying Commissar Yarrick because I like his fluff a lot, and either a second leman russ or a basilisk. Thanks!

That's worth about $325 direct from GW and with the exception of the Sentinels those are all fairly commonly used models. Looks like enough to make an army in the 500-750 points range. You'd probably want to buy some Chimeras on top of that and various other odds and ends depending on exactly what style catches your fancy.

Wait, what my best guess is that that's at least 60 units, and it's only 500-750 points? I didn't realize IG cost that little in points.

Infantry costs about 5 points each, or 70 points (without upgrades) as Vets. That's about the most you'll get out of them. The Leman Russ costs about 150 to 200 points depending on what you give it. And every 3 weapon teams can range from 90-150 or so. Guards are a horde army because you need alot of bodies or alot of tanks to fill out the points. And you will need it, as they're rather poor shots (although not as bad as Orks) and die really easily.

Also, it seems to be the same as buying 2 battle forces and getting a Tank. It's a great starting point if it's a deal (compare prices with the stuff on the GW website).

Depends on how you choose to field the units. Going by an infantry platoon, you're looking at about 300 or so points, give or take depending on options. Going with a CCS and 2 vet squads, about 50-100 points or so higher than that. I'm intentionally using estimated numbers to not give out the exact cost of units.

With a bit of finagling two battleforces and a command squad can get you about 990 points. I think i managed to get about 450 points out of a single battleforce.

It's not a bad deal, but it won't give you a competitive list. Once you buy this, you're still going to need to buy a bunch of special weapons and either a couple more boxes of infantry or a few chimeras.

It can reach quite high a points, but get what you need, not what saves money first.

Yeah he is probably only worth it on an Executioner/Exterminator but what else would I get for those 50 points? A bare bones Infantry Squad, or a Commissar and add a Plasma Gun somewhere?

Take another Bare Bones infantry squad and combine it with the squad with the Commissar. You can use FRFSRF on them to get a pants-crappingly huge number of lasgun shots.

So that is 2 battleforces and a leman russ. GW's colonial website says that would come to $239.50, so you're saving 12%. I dunno about over there, but I know some online discounters in the UK can give 25% discounts (although without free shipping).

@Mecha: Sounds good man, I could even drop the smoke launchers off of the Scouts to get a melta in there.

@Ulver: Yeah I have shopped around a bit and the cheapest I can find all of this stuff is 201.94 total after shipping. If you have any websites you could suggest I'd appreciate it

I don't know of any Stateside, but you could try www.darksphere.co.uk, they're the cheapest I've found so far. I've just had a look there and including delivery to the US it is $184.83/£119.15 (conversion according to www.xe.com). They've always shipped quickly when I've ordered from them and the delivery time states 5-7 days although will depend.

You may get hit by currency conversion charges, taxes etc. buying stuff from the UK, so for $17 saving it's probably not worth the extra effort.
