While flicking through my Black Templars codex, it struck me as odd that the Templars don't have any heavy weapons squads at all. Sure, they're not exactly fans of the Codex Astartes and they like close combat, but surely they must see the use of long-range support units. As such, I came up with this support vehicle, similar to the Whirlwind of the Codex chapters:

Squall

Points F S R BS
120 12 11 10 4

Type: Tank

Crew: 2 Initiates

Weapons: The Squall is armed with a Squall MRL System and a pintle-mounted storm bolter

Vehicle upgrades: Squalls may have any of the following vehicle upgrades at the points cost listed in the Black Templars armoury: Hunter-Killer Missile, Dozer Blade, Pintle-Mounted Storm Bolter, Extra Armour, Power of the Machine Spirit, Searchlight, Smoke Launchers

Squall MRL System: A combination of the Cyclone Missile Launcher and the Whirlwind, the Squall fires a deadly barrage of missiles and has access to multiple types of warheads. It can fire using any of the profiles below. Declare which mode you are using before measuring range.

Squall (krak): Heavy 4, S8 AP3 48" range

Squall (frag): Heavy 4, S4 AP6, Blast 48" range

Squall (EM): Heavy 2, S7 AP 2* 48" range

*Any vehicle hit by a EM missile is automatically stunned, in addition to any other damage inflicted by the shot.

Thoughts? A points cost suggestion would be welcome.

EDIT: Updated with points suggestion, updated the EM missile and added the missing ranges.

I'm guessing this will have the same chassis as the Whirlwind. If so, then it should be F AV11. The missile launcher looks good, but where's the range of the missiles? But overall it's a nice idea.

I like it. You didn't specifiy, but I assume this is a Heavy Support Choice?

I like the idea a lot actually, especially the EM missiles. Even if the vehicle idea gets scrapped they could be a good idea as a Terminator shoulder launched weapon. Continuing the ECM theme would give the BT's something else that was unique as, 'Chapter that Assaults stuff' is kind overdone these days.

As for the vehicle, I'd think 120 points would be about the mark. It has arguably more shooting power than a Predator, but weaker armor.

I wonder if an ECM Landspeeder might not be in order as well. I'm thinking something like this:

Raiden Pattern Land Speeder

Points: 95

BS:4 F:10 S:10 R:10

Raiden ECM Pod:
-On a roll of 5 or 6 any enemy vehicle passed over takes one glancing hit with a negative 2 to rolls.

Raider Missile Launcher:
Heavy 2, S7, AP3 - Any vehicle hit by this weapon is stunned in addition to any other results on the vehicle damage chart. This effect works even if the weapon otherwise fails to penetrate.

I also think your Squall missile should be S7 just so it can effect anything short of AV14.

A -4 modifier to the damage table?

I was thinking old rules and a separate table, that should instead be a minus 1 for a total of minus 3. Enough to disable a turret and be damned annoying, but not overly powerful.

D'oh, the missiles are supposed to haev a 48" range. Regarding the AV12, I figured that while the Squall is similar to the Whirlwind, it doesn't have the ability to fire indirectly, thus forcing it to be exposed. The +1 AV is there to mitigate some of this weakness.

I like your suggestion a lot! However, I feel that instead of removing the assault focus of the BT, which IMO would turn them into something not BT, the ECM weaponry could somehow be incorporated into the Templars wargear. We already have thunder hammers, so something similar shouldn't be too far-fetched. Maybe ECM grenades?
