Hi guys,

A quick little question I can't seem to find a definitive answer for;

If a Space Marine squad (Sternguard) is armed with multiple Combi-Weapons (Melta) and I would like to fire at a vehicle (or any target really), do I have to choose a certain number of Combi's to fire and then roll them all together or can I simple trigger one at a time until a satisfactory amount of damage (destruction) is done?

BEARDY I hear you scream!

Is it though? If you think about it from a fluff/real-world point of view, why would X amount of guys - armed with a very powerful one use weapon - suddenly jump up and shoot all of their special weapons at the same time? If you try and picture Space Marines doing this it just seems laughable. Mostly likely that said squad would use their weapons more tactically, using consecutive shots only when the previous ones had failed.

You must nominate what all is firing from a particular unit before any ranges are measured or to-hit rolls are made. All of a unit's fire happens simultaneously. This is detailed on: BRB, pg 16, left column, under Which Models Can Fire?, second sentence.

Afaik you declare all of your shooting from one unit at the same time so you would have to decide how many to shoot/not shoot before any rolls are made.

Ah yes! Well done SlaveToDorkness, missed/forgot that tiny little paragraph. Only started to use Combi's recently so it slipped my mind.

Subject closed then - that was quick!

Yep, and you can do that on consecutive turns.

STD has directed you to the correct rules. Remember, this applies to all shooting, not just combi's. Also, you must do all shooting before resolving damage. So if someone shoots bolters and a flamer at you, you cannot remove casualties for the bolters before the flamer fires.
