OP, in the turn that you move into assault (i.e. the turn that you are assaulting) you get +1 attack. The defender does not. If you stay locked in combat then neither of you get that bonus in subsequent turns. This also applies to other bonuses for when you're assaulting like furious charge.
P37 - +1 Assault Bonus: Engaged models who assaulted this turn
P33 - 1. Move assaulting units.
As you can see from P33 "assaulting" is used to mean the processes of declaring an assault and moving into contact, not simply fighting in an assault.
