Me and my friend are a bit confused. I know in the rules it says you get +1 if you're assulting. So if my unit assults my opponents unit, I get +1. That much I understand. But if he doesn't fall back and we're still locked in combat, and his turn comes around, and it's his assult phase, does HE get the +1 now? I mean, he's not really assulting - he's locked in combat from my previous assult. So I guess my question is do I only get the +1 bonus?

Thanks in advance,
Oriphus

You get the +1 attack bonus for charging.

If you're locked in combat, you can't charge.

So, you would get the +1 bonus during the assault phase when you charged. In subsequent assault phases, neither player gets a bonus.

Not the best way of explaining it since the 40K rules don't use the term "charging" any more.

OP, in the turn that you move into assault (i.e. the turn that you are assaulting) you get +1 attack. The defender does not. If you stay locked in combat then neither of you get that bonus in subsequent turns. This also applies to other bonuses for when you're assaulting like furious charge.

P37 - +1 Assault Bonus: Engaged models who assaulted this turn
P33 - 1. Move assaulting units.

As you can see from P33 "assaulting" is used to mean the processes of declaring an assault and moving into contact, not simply fighting in an assault.

And that's an even better explanation.

No, really though. So much of how we play 40k is based purely on how we played 40k in the past. It is entirely possible that we are all collectively playing something wrong.

I mean, I had to explain to people all the way into 5th edition that my basilisks no longer literally required me to guess a range.
