Simple as that. Do you think it would look poor to paint the metal on my knights armour then weather it?

Would it be preferable, like marine armour?

A Knight isn't likely to have rusty weather-beaten armour...

how would the metal armour being weathered be heraldry anyway?

Or do you mean paint the heraldry on the metal, then weather it as if the painted heraldry had worn off through use etc?

Armor of Knights may be "weathered" if you want a Knight who fought in a battle on a rainy field of mud and lost his horse.
Anyone sitting still high up there would have enough minions to clean his armor or does not get that dirty.

So 'Knight on foot with battered wargear' = > effects welcome.
But 'Knight mounted and not in battle' => cleaner than the peons.

not what I meant

Paint his armour colours [red and blue I guess?]

then make the armour look chipped and rougher.

A few hints on the model used could help us to know your intends.
- Is it a WHFB fig?
- Mounted, on foot?
- Bretonnian, or Empire?
- Historic or fantasy?

In History, european knights didn't paint their armor. The shield maybe, to carry his Heraldry but most of the 'blinged' stuff was meant for Tournys.
