See attached picture.

My fiance picked this up for me as a stocking stuffer for Christmas, and now as I prepare to assemble it I though I would get an opinion. These model is obviously in old packaging. The store she got it from even has some pewter guardians with the face grill. Some WH40K and WHFB models they have are so old that the plastic display cover like on this one are browned with age. And some have a WH40K logo with red lettering instead of green. The price for them in the store is comparable to that of any other new pewter mini. Should I grab these for collector's value? Buy them to sell higher online? Or just let it go and assemble this guy. EDIT: FYI, this is a Eldar Striking Scorpion Exarch

If I'm correct, that dates back to around the 3rd ed by the looks of the packaging. The model design, however, could date back to the 2nd edition.

3rd ed scorpion exarch. Gary Morley sculpts iirc. The look never gelled with the previous Jes Goodwin ones so I didn't bother with them.

GW added the blobby gem bits to the tops of the helmets for the 3rd ed ones.

2nd ed scorpions were the original ones (from late RT).

I have 2nd and 3rd edition scorpion exarchs, will post a photo later if I have a chance.

Not sure about collectibility or that shop would have been raided for those a while back

I only started at roughly the end of 3rd ed, so I didnt know much about model releases dating before then.

If that's the model I'm thinking of, it might be illegal to field now. My friend was bemoaning how his Striking Scorpion Exarch (which looked like that one) was now rendered invalid because the wargear options were not possible now.

Severedblue, if you could post those pictures I would be grateful. I just got into the game in Spring 2010 so I know little of what came before. To understand the game's past is something of a curiosity I like to satisfy.

Personally I think the newer Eldar from what I have seen from the very old are quite better looking. While some head-dresses and aspects still seem quite clownish, the sleek newest guardian form actually looks rather formidable while retaining the elegance portrayed by the elven-type scheme.

That's mainly because there's a huge gap between the newer models and the old ones. Most of the other armies got regular updates throughout the years, so the differences are neglectable.

That exarch is legal.
Shuriken pistol and exchange chainsword for scorpion's claw (which has a built in ranged weapon also).

Legal, just not really useful as you lose the +1 attack for 2ccw (powerclaw)

Thing is, the built-in weapon is a Shuriken Catapult. Also he should have a Scorpion Chainsword, as he switches out the pistol for the claw. He's not allowed to switch out the chainsword for the Claw anymore.

Seriously, are these things worth more than face value or not? Not to be a sack o crap but if this is the missing treasure trove I want to know! If I can even sell it for +50% value I want to know. So let me in on those e-bay experiences.

No, No they are not.

Or

It depends on what a potential buyer thinks it is worth/is prepared to pay.

If I am honest, it isn't worth anymore than retail value. And with ebay and discount web retail it will most probably be worth less than you think.

If you want to see some classic citadel (thats GW ) minis that may be worth a lot(or, again, not) check out this link.

Just paint it up and game with it.

Its just pewter. If you want it, buy it. Otherwise leave it.

I miss the old Eldar. The big hair and better looking armour. They look so "simple" these days.

Currently collecting and painting Eldar from W40k.

I think only Gamesday models and limited edition promotional models ever appreciate in value. However those are extremely rare since only a few thousand were ever made, compared to the untold millions that they must have cranked out for the older, but more widespread models.

Buy it and put it in the back of the closet.

People are funny. Some people won't buy them at all, unless they are brand spanking new, other people buy them and sell them for "Collectors" whatever thats supposed to mean. Depending on what you want, you can or won't make money on them.

Seeing as the Eldar just came out with a book, I'd expect that they arn't in demand, just yet. On the other hand, if you can get them for a decent price, let them ride for a year or two, or even longer, they might either become desired, or not, depending on the plastics issue.

Hence, I'd recommend getting them now, and putting them in the back.

As for your other question, red lettering came in the early ninties. Red lettering black cardstock blister packs. Later months after second edition, was blue backing with yellow with the little termie skull on the side of "Warhammer40K"
New releases tended to come in red backing with the warhammer lettering, and the different games had different colors, depending on the game. Fantasy had green, then later red backing. 40K had blue, and later that stone colored grey backing.
Limited edition came in black backing in a blister pack.

As a side note, I'm on the lookout for a limited... Very limited edition Necromunda female sniper bounty hunter. I'm told that that one came in a tiny plastic bag, and was only available for the first month or two that that first edition Necromunda came out.
Other models, such as the Adeptus mechanicus Limited edition set came in a plastic blister box, in a white cardstock box. such the same way as mail order bits, and direct sales come today.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Your picture is specificly a 3d-4th edition miniature. That C is the key. They were for a time pricing thier models on an Alphabet scale, C was one of the 7 and some change ones. ( dollars that is.) They had some that wre 19.95, and others that were 7.95, and still others, such as the boxed sets that were 19.95, and later price increases nullified the A,B,C, way of pricings.

hope that helps.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

The 3rd Ed Scorpions (and most of the other aspects that were redone for 3rd) were done by Juan Diaz... they were amongst his first sculpts for GW. They look like Morley sculpts though as Morley was responsible for training that particular batch of trainee sculptors.
