So, after many weeks of deliberation, I finally bought myself a squad of 5 ogryn (well, a pack of leadbealchers and a bone 'ead, because dammit im not spending $26 per ogryn), and they have performed AWSOMELY. First game I used them, they killed vulcan and his retinue of 5 termies. (2 terminators in shooting, the rest in assault). The second game I scouted them in from the side of the board (creed ftw) and they ate a 10 man tac squad w/ heavy weapons and tore the gun off of a Vindicator. Why are these things supposed to be bad again?

Because they're each a $26 piece of wallet-raping metal. That and Shelling people from afar with Leman Russes is probably more cost effective (point wise anyways).

Also try getting Ogre Bulls next time. You get more Ogres for your buck!

so much fun to be the one charging instead of being charged tho, and the look of surprise at how tough they are is nice too

thanks for the heads up on the ogre bulls, but I also wanted something that had a gun. do they come with those?

They only come with Swords and Ironfists. However the position of the arm makes it easy to slip on a gun on them (I use IG Autocannons and Heavy Bolters left over from Heavy Weapon Teams). The only difference they have to the leadbelchers is the arms.

Thanks for the advice, but I prefer the looks of the cannons. Besides, the goblin on the shoulder of one sans his head looks like some big nosed gnome thing, so I decided not to clip it off and instead made it the ogryns little buddy

Lol I have the Battalion (two actually, since I have an Ogre Kingdoms Army) and some of the "normal" gnoblars are pretty characterful.

Some kind of Goblinoid that apparently tastes horrible, so they became the Ogre's servants (because they were worth more in their labor than as a meal, which apparently the normal goblins and nightgoblins did not live up to).

I like how the first thing they did was try to eat them

Well the Ogre's entire culture focuses on eating. The only reason they dont eat their clubs or the Gnoblars is because the former is their best friend, and the latter tastes horrible. In the book, there was a mock scientific report on a dissected Ogre. Apparently he ate an Empire Pistolier, horse and all. He died via a pistol up the throat.

People see the 40-points-apiece price tag and don't even bother considering what they can do. They're just expensive, so they MUST be bad somehow...

Anyways, I've been using them a bit recently, but I'm starting to phase them out because my local meta is unkind to them. There is a lot of assault cannon, shuriken cannon, dark lance, and thunder hammer use afoot, and those wounds start racking up pretty fast once multi-shot S6+ weapons start bearing down on them.

It feels like they really needed to be used with good synergy in order for them to both survive and do damage. This requires other good targets to shoot at, and, in the very least, requires a lord commissar which brings the price tag even higher.

for 40 points you get a model with a decently powerful close range gun, T and S5 (meaning no instant kill via a lascannon), a decent number of attacks, and a crapload of wounds per model. With furious charge on top of all that, they're pretty damn powerful even if they go second half the time. Nids would love something along those lines, warriors die to anti-tank guns far too easily (and even battle cannons. 1 shot = instant death). They're a pretty good deal for their points.

Well, cant remember who it was, but once a wise dakka member gave me a simple example. Up against the same points of ork boys, 5 ogryn will lose, even if they shoot beforehand, then assault.
