Hi all,
I know that embarked infantry can fire from non open topped transport, but i was wondering where do you mesure distance from?
For example: in the rihno entry in the c:sm it states that a number of models can fire from the top hatch, so my interpretation is that you can mesure from any edge of the hatch (the rectangular one),is that correct or are we supposed to use the hull?
Another way to do it would be to put the model on the hatch and mesure from its base(unnecessary maybe but you would lose some distance in the corner).

Another related question, can a model fire a template weapon (flamer) from a transport or are we supposed to consider the template covering a friendly unit thus making the shot illegal?

The top hatch is one of the two at the front of the vehicle, preferably the one with no weapon on it.

I'm not sure on the flamer issue, it's been debated before but because I've yet to use a flamer from a non open top vehicle I don't know the answer.

Measure from the designated fire point, in the rhino's case, the top hatch. And I think the template issue has been resolved time and time again, it does not affect the rhino, but is still measured from the fire point.

The eye of terror.

The template issue has never been resolved. The newest rulebook FAQ *implies* that you can fire a template out of the fire point by saying the template does not damage the vehicle, but unfortunately does not actually over-ride the rule against placing templates on friendly models.

However, 99% of people play that you can use a template weapon out of a fire point.

Wizard12 is incorrect. The top hatch (note the singular word in the rule) is the big rectangular one on the back; you can measure from anywhere on it.

Krados, the template out of a hatch thing was a rules conflict for a long time, although most people allowed it. GW finally fixed it, along with a number of other excellent and overdue rulings, when they updated the main rulebook FAQ in November.

EDIT: Technically Willy is correct that the phrasing of the ruling is off; the point is not whether it can hurt the vehicle (which would have mattered in 3rd edition or 4th edition, when it was legal to clip your own models with a template weapon but they got hit too), but that the 5th ed rules completely forbid covering your own models with a template weapon. However, the intent is (IMO) clear enough.

This is what I remembered had resolved the issue, just couldn't find the link! But how else would an Immolator work? the template would have to cover some of the hull, especially if it were firing broadside.

The top hatch. Singular. I.e. the big one at the back. You know, the one that's accessible from the passenger compartment.

At the FLGS where I used to play I think we counted the templates as hitting the vehicle too.
