Got done with another BDG 1850 RTT. Had a great time. They are small, but very fun tournaments with a bunch of cool dudes.

I brought a "hobby" list this time just for a change of pace. Not ultra competitive, but not terrible, either.

HQ:
Khan on Bike
Command squad on bikes: S.Shield x 3, P.Weapon x 3, Champ
Chaplain on Bike

Troops:
Tac Squad x 10: L.Cannon, Flamer, Razorback
Tac Squad x 10: L.Cannon, Flamer, Razorback

Fast:
Typhoon x 2
Typhoon
M.Melta A.Bikes x 3

Heavy:
Predator: L.Cannon/A.Cannon
Predator: L.Cannon/A.Cannon

Game 1: Table Quarters. Most scoring units in a table quarter claims it. Most table quarters at game's end wins.
Deployment: Spearhead
Opponent: Dark Eldar

HQ:
Archon: S.Field, Djinn Blade
Homunculai: WWP, Liquifier

Troops:
Warriors x 20: B.Lance x 2
Warriors x 5: Blaster, Venom w/ S.Cannon x 2
Warriors x 5: Blaster, Venom w/ S.Cannon x 2

Elites:
Trueborn x 3: Blaster x 3, Venom w/ S.Cannon x 2
Grotesques x 3

Fast:
Beastmaster: x 4, Kymerhae x 4, Razorwings x 7
Reavers x 6: H.Lance x 2
Reavers x 6: H.Lance x 2

Heavy:
Talos
Talos
Cronos

My opponent's list was a bit of a mash-up, without a lot of focus, which cost him. He was using a WWP but really only one unit took advantage of it: the large squad of beastmasters. I got first turn and he reserved a large chunk of his army. I positioned my army to play a defensive game with combat squads of tac marines ready to move into whichever table quarter they were needed in. I sent my super bike squad up to cause disruption and they just sucked horribly (which was to be a theme of the tournament!). They killed a squad of Reavers but even with 3++'s and FNP all over the place got taken down by a combination of the Grotesques, Archon and Beastmaster squad. My dice were terrible and I barely did any damage with them before they died. Khan did at least kill all the Grotesques with his instant death sword in the turn before he got beaten down, which soothed my wounded pride a bit! In the end, my opponent spread out too much and his units coming on piece meal were easy pickings for my army. I ended up with 2 Table quarters to his 0 and destroyed most of his list. He was still learning DE though and so at the end when I started giving him some tips to help him out.

The Talos and Cronos were utterly underwhelming. If he had had them come out of the WWP, they may have done something, but still, those guys were sitting ducks. If he had focused his army and come at me in a rush, he would have done much better as with his higher IN and power weapons, he could handle my counterattack unit (biker squad). But in all, a fun game against a nice guy. I ended up winning with full bonus points as his final troops unit, the large squad of warriors, failed their morale check last turn and ran away. That is the flaw of that otherwise great objective holding unit. Every turn I put enough wound son it to force a check and eventually he failed one. With FNP from the Homunclai they are very hard to shift.

Game 2: 3 Objectives, one middle board, one in each deployment zone. Player with most at game's end, wins.
Deployment: 1-3 Pitched Battle, 4-6 Spearhead. We rolle dspearhead.
Opponent: Italiaplaya's Fatecrusher Daemons.....again! Haha, 4th tournament in a row we have pulled each other.

HQ:
Fatewaver
Bloodthirster

Elites:
Bloodcrushers x 6: fully diversified
Bloodcrushers x 6: fully diversified
Fiends x 6: Might

Troops:
Plague Bearers x 6
Plague Bearers x 5
Plague Bearers x 5

Fast:
Seekers x 12: Might

So I knew I would have major issues with this list. Without a dreadnought to tie up his crushers, I would have to rely on speed to stay away form them. I got second turn and so deployed far forward to threaten his objective (we both placed our objectives in the far corners of our deployment zones). Italiaplaya dropped his preferred wave in defensive positions to protect his own objective, and the seekers in my zone to threaten mine. I then pulled my entire army back into a defensive position in my zone and focused fired everything on the Seekers and wiped them out. From here, Italiaplaya had to cross the board diagonally to get to me, which effectively meant he was not going to get to my Objective by game's end. I kept falling back and shooting but my dice were atrocious and his saves were insane, he hardly even needed Fateweaver. Over 4 turns of shooting my entire army into his, and charging Bloodthirster with my super unit I did a grand total of 2 wounds total! It was horrible! In the end, I crashed his objectives with fast movers hoping to end the game on 5, but it went another turn and he managed to kill all of my contesting units. Had stupid Khan not failed his Hit and Run check on the last turn, I could have tank shocked my last mobile Razorback onto the middle objective and gotten a tie game. But I rolled that 6 and Khan stayed locked in combat, blocking my tank shock. Dang it! So, I lost the game, 2 objectives to 1. At least one of us finally won! We have tied all of our previous games. It was a funny game though, nearly nothing died on either side.

Game 3: Kill Points, 1 objective in center board worth 3 KP, can only be held by scoring unit.
Deployment: 1-3 Spearhead, 4-6 Pitched Battle. We rolled pitched battle.
Opponent: Usi's Sisters of Battle

HQ:
Cannoness: Eviscerator, Book of St. Lucious
Celestians x 5: M.Gun x 2, Imagifier, M.Gun x 2
Imolator, X-Arm, Smoke

Cannoness: Eviscerator, Book of St. Lucious
Celestians x 5: M.Gun x 2, Imagifier, M.Gun x 2
Imolator, X-Arm, Smoke

Elites:
Celestians x 5: M.Gun x 2, Imolator, X-Arm, Smoke
Celestians x 5: M.Gun x 2, Imolator, X-Arm, Smoke
Celestians x 5: M.Gun x 2, Imolator, X-Arm, Smoke

Troops:
Sisters x 10: S.Superior, Flamer, C.Flamer, H.FLamer, Rhino, x-arm, Smoke, Eviscerator
S.Troopers x 5: P.Gun x 2, Rhino, x-arm, smoke

Fast:
Dominions x 5: M.Gun x 4, Immolator, M.Melta, Smoke, x-arm
Dominions x 5: M.Gun x 4, Immolator, Smoke, x-arm

Heavy:
Exorcist

A nasty Sisters army, but KP heavy. He had 20 to my 12 and I got first turn, so I had a big advantage. My dice were hot and I destroyed or immobilized 4 Immolators right away. It looked grim but as always happens with sisters, as he got closer to me, the game got fierce. By turn 4 he was catching up to me in KPs rapidly as his sisters chopped Predators in half with Eviscerators, and melt gunned down my units. Once again, my bike squad of suck, sucked. They turbo boosted forward to multi-charge some sisters and just got plowed. Khan and the Chappy survived this game for a change of pace and managed to do a fair bit of damage but the unit itself just fizzled. One of my tac squads got charged by siters and killed to the man! Oh the shame, big buff space marines getting punked by girls in close combat! Haha, that was pretty funny. By game's end, most of my army was gutted as he came on strong, but he had so many KPs that I won. That is the downside to an MSU army, even when you kill more of the other guy's army, he can still beat you by focusing on taking down the easy KPs. It was a very fun game though, as it became so much more intense as turns went by. Had Usi gone first, I think I would have stood a good chance of losing.

In the end, I placed 4th out of 12, so not the best, but not bad for a non-optimized list. That super bike unit just really underperformed this time! Haha, what a points sink. It is a fun unit though. Had I not had some good old Space Marine standbys like the preds and typhoons, I would have gotten smoked. I think it would be better just to give the bike command squad all plasma guns and let them do their own thing. Much more of a threat that way.

In all a great day spent tossing dice as tournament usually are.

Nice report, it is nice to see a diverse number of opponents and evne your MEQ were the interesting Khan variety rather than Vulkan/lysander/shrike style.

I am surprised you kill 4 Rhinos/Immos Turn 1, that is some great rolling on the damage chart!

@Huckelberry
They are on the website: http://www.blackdiamondgames.com/calendar.html

Typically the second Saturday of the month, and they start at 11. Everyone who plays there is a lot of fun with a wide variety of armies, so it is well worth the trip. Plus, most every player is really good, too. Makes for a fun day.

@djphranq
Actually, I don't know his handle on the forums, but he also plays his D at GW Alamo, so maybe you have seen him? It is an unpainted army as of now, but he made some great Venom conversions out of Vipers. When he gets it painted, it will look really cool.

@Calypso2ts
Yeah, they are really fun events. I have only played an MEQ army twice in one tournament at their events. It is usually a nice mix of armies. Plus, since they don't have a painting requirement, people bring out their wackier lists to experiment, sine those tend to have the models that aren't painted in them! Khan lists can be really good. I never used his outflank ability as my army was mostly shooting oriented, but he is still good fun. You can make a really cool outflanking bike army using him, which maybe I will try next go around. But yeah, my first turn shooting was hot, it looked like it was going to be a tabling at that point but my opponent fought his way back into it, which always makes for a fun game.

Variety is wroth playing against unpainted armies on occasion, IMO. Fully painted armies are preferable of course, but if playing DE, Sisters and Daemons as my tournament lineup means unpainted armies? I'll take it every time!

Under a rock

You guys scored a lot points on HQ rankings last year. This seems like just another RTT.

Live for the day...

Probably because it was just another RTT?

Anyway kudos to you Reece for bringing something different. I'm planning on doing the same thing for the next RTT I have up this way since I took my wolves to a tourney yesterday and took it 3-0. Now it's time to play with just fun an different stuff

@Huckelberry
Hope to see you there!

@Black Fiend
Yes, as it says in the title of the thread it was an 1850 RTT. I go to lots of them. Maybe not super exciting but very enjoyable way to spend the day. Sorry if this wasn't that exciting for you to read.

@Hulk
Nice one! Way to win an event! I won one with my Wolves last month, too. I just felt like doing something different. I impulse bought 4 packs of the retro FW armor (MK2,3,4, and 5) haha, so now I have like 170 power armored marines in my space marine army. So unnecessary! But I want to start bringing themed lists to RTTs just for a change of pace. I have some really funky lists I am gong to bring, so it should be fun. The Bjorn Wolves will only be coming out for GTs and GT practice games I think.

I am also finishing up my footguard and Nids. Haha, great minds think alike, I guess!

I am building a 10th company army as well Reecius. I am holding of a little because I think there is an escalation league in the works nearby I would like to build them for.

What were you going to use for your HQ choice? I was thinking MotF myself and maybe bringing some TFC as well.

I have actually been running the quasi-scout army for a few years now. The way I play it is a bit of a gamblers army, but it is a super fun army to play and when it works it works big.

I run Shrike as my HQ to give the scouts FoF. That way if you go first you get a first turn charge (infiltrate to 18", scout move 6", regular move 6", FoF 1-6", Charge 6")

I have 3, 10 man scout squads with close combat weapons and a fist on sarge.

I also have a squad of 5 sniper scouts so technically it is a 35 scout army.

Actually, here's the list:

Unit Description Size Cost
HQ
Shrike 1 195
Chaplain J.Pack 1 115

Troops
Scouts P.Fist 10 165
Scouts P.Fist 10 165
Scouts P.Fist 10 165
Sniper Scouts Cloaks, H.Bolter 5 100

Elites
Sternguard C.Plasma x5, C.Melta x5, D.Pod 11 335
Dreadnought A.Cannon, H.Flamer, D.Pod 2 160
Dreadnought Auto Cannon x 2, D.Pod 2 160

Fast Attack
Assault Squad P.Fist 10 215
Assault Squad P.Fist 10 215

Heavy Support

Totals 72 1990

That's with 10 points to spare.

Super fast, alpha strike assault army capable of assaulting with 42 bodies turn 1. Combine that with the sternguard and Dread dropping in to pop vehicles and you have a really fun list that can take people by surprise. Maybe not a GT winner, but still good fun and easily good enough for an RTT.

I think that giving the scouts fleet really makes them viable. Plus I think Shrike sort of fits in with the theme of the list (scout/forward recon) more than any other HQ.

The Rifleman dread doesn't actually pod, he starts on board and drops his pod empty. He just has one to let the other two units come down turn 1.

Like I said, a really fun army but if the other guy steals the initiative, hahaha, you get hosed! Going second I tend to outflank a lot of stuff and play a wait and see type game.
