Hey Dakka, two part question: can a unit get on top of a vehicle, and if so, can the model "ride" the vehicle?

Nope, sorry. See Models In The Way, page 11.

I often put one of the squad guys on top of my transports, however, just to indicate to my opponent that there's a squad embarked and which squad it is. You can get the visual that way.

Most certainly not. Apart from being expressly forbidden in the rules, it would also turn all vehicles into open topped transports. (effectively)

i.e. - you climb on, move the vehicle and then assault off it.

As well as the note on P11, P13 also notes that other models are impassable terrain.

The one exceptiion is a wrecked vehicle...but at that point it's not a vehicle anymore. It's just terrain.

Yeah they totally do - it's the weird "Dedicated Transport" rule you hear about every now and then.

It's pretty complicated, but basically they buy a vehicle, and then ride around inside of it.

But not "on top of" the vehicle, which is what this thread is talking about

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

Well, actually there is an IG tactic for infantry to ride on top of vehicles. Just not on regular games but in Apocalypse. Imperial Guard has a Strategic Asset called ( surprise ) "Tank Riders" in Apocalypse Reload.

So for wrecked vehicles (terrain), you can actually get on top of it (counting as difficult, but is it dangerous), and move across it like any other terrain?

Yes. Difficult and Dangerous, per page 62.
