I have always flamed from the gun itself, but yesterday I saw people flaming from a redeemer anywhere along the hull. When I asked they said while you have to draw range and los from the gun itself, after that as per the rules for flamer you use the base of the model.

Did I miss something, or am I just crazy?

Vehicles use the actual gun for ranges, there is no base like infantry models.

They're doing it wrong.

The range of a template is the length of the template. If you use the gun for range, then what allows you to use the hull?

Ask them to show you where the base is on their Redeemer.

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't the flamers on the Redeemer sponson mounted, with a 180 degree sweep? The only places it couldn't fire is directly in front or behind.

I can see where they're getting their idea from, but as mentioned previously a vehicle has no "base." When using a template weapon, placing the template becomes the replacement of the "measuring range" step. As infantry models measure range from their base, the template is placed next to their base. As vehicles measure range from their gun barrel, the template should be placed coming from said barrel.
