I am a little confused with this rule. Is it always in effect or does it have to be called at the start of the game? Am I wrong with that? I am lost. Does it make the entire unit one squad when shooting and taking orders? I just need a simple explaination of the rule I guess as I am starting a footguard army. Thanks in advance.

has to be announced, and remember its only the infantry squads, not the platoon command, hw squads, etc.

At time of deployment you can choose to combine all the infantry squads in a platoon (note, not the command squad, special weapon squads or heavy weapons squads) into a single unit. They then act as a single unit for all purposes (shooting, combat, orders, all benefit from a commissar, etc)

And if you have sufficent squads you can combine them as you wish, 5 squads for example can be combined into two units of 20 and 30 men.
