I know that the transport can only contest objectives. Do the troops inside the transport have to disembark in order to control an objective or do they count as being with in range if the transport is?

Page 67, under "embarking", tells you that if you need to measure a range involving the unit that you measure to or from the hull.

The more specific quote is from page 90 BRB, last sentence on the right hand column, "Units of Troops embarked in a transport can control objectives (measure the distance to their vehicle's hull)."
