Subject: Early (Winter) War Finns?

This may be a stupid question but...I'm brand new to FOW, have the main rulebook, the Mid/late War Finn PDFs, a few Maxim platoons, and a Grenadierkompanie I plan to convert into a Rajajaakari Kompania (Border Jaegers).
I'd like to play in a few Early war games as well but can't seem to find an official list for Finns during the Early War period.
I know they were technically fighting the Winter War then but I don't see why they wouldn't be included in an official list for this period. As I understand it, Eastern Front has Finns but it doesn't cover Early War.
Can anyone help?

I think you're in for one hell of a ride
The thing to remember is that at the start (and really, for the duration) of the Winter War, Finland was woefully underequipped. All the material help Germany gave to us happened in the Continuation War. For the Winter War our armor consisted of antiquated junk and whatever we could capture from the Soviets. At the same time, it's not like we were running a horde type army like the Soviets, where numbers would make up for the poor equipment, so that's going to be a problem for game balance.
I think that in order to be fun and viable to play, you'd have to come up with a bunch of special rules to represent the way Finland fought.

Looks like you're in the same boat I am ancientsociety. As of yet there are no Early War lists for the eastern front, though I assume battlefront has plans to cover it in the future. Best thing you can do is check the Early War development board on the Battlefront forums to see if there is something there to play around with, and if not you'll just have to wait. You shouldn't have to wait too long seeing as someone in the studio loves Finns and they did Late War lists for the them long before any of the other minor powers, albeit as a pdf.

That's kind of what I figured!
I was going to play them in the Adepticon Early War tournie, ran using the Mid-War list past the organizer, but I'd rather not have anyone complain.
Ah well, may have to play Allies then!

Does it have a blue-ish background/layout?
If so, that's the "unofficial" list from the FOW forums. I've seen it, and it's pretty good but couldn't use it for the tournie.

There is no "official" list for the Finns at this time. The only official Early War lists are found in the book 'Blitzkrieg', and cover the Germans, British, French, and Poles up through to the Fall of France. Official Finnish lists are currently only available in Ostfront/Eastern Front for Mid-War, and as a PDF for Late War.
Now having said that...
I know that there are a series of Early War PDF lists floating around that are considered valid at some tournaments (apparently at least one of the creators of FoW had a hand in their creation). But I don't know where they are, and I don't know if Finns are included in them.
Finally, the Early War Soviets won't be covered until the Barbarossa book is released. And that is tentatively slated for release in the Summer of 2012. We know that the book will include lists for the Soviet forces that fought against the German invasion. What we don't know is whether or not the book will include lists for the Soviet invasion of Poland or Finnish forces for the Winter War.

All the Early War PDF's are in the Early War Development area on the FOW Website. From the talk on the site it appears that they are all acceptable at most tournaments (I dont do tournaments). The Early War Soviet list covers Barbarossa, Poland and the Winter war and could be used for Manchuria, although there is no Japan PDF on the site (I believe there is one from the states that can be found on ebay)

 It better!
I decided to go a different route with Early War and just do French but I'm expanding my Finn force for Mid/Late War and doing a lot of research to make them as accurate as possible.

Do a search on the official FoW website for the B-29 Nuclear Strike Force list, and you'll get a pretty good idea about Battlefront's opinion of the IJA list...

I think we could revive this thread, since Finns were introduced in Rising Sun. I'm going to make a list soon.
