Ok, So I am planning to start a Deathwing army very soon and so decided that I would kitbash a terminator together and try out my colour scheme on him. I wanted a very dirty, and worn out suit, but one that would be relatively easy to paint, as well as very quick. So this guy took me 10-15 minutes and I was wondering what you guys think of him. All kinds of criticism are welcome and so please, feel free to tear it apart. I want honest comments here so I can build off it for my army.

Thanks!

Not the right place for this bud, showcase thread is for finished models only, this should go over to the regular p&m forum for criticisms and discussions. I'm sure a mod would be happy to move it for you!

My comment would be the edge highlight is way too harsh, either add more blends, or switch to dry brushing if you want to keep your painting time low.

Well, he is a finished model...
In real life though the highlights are more subdued. My camera seems to be far too harsh >.>
I'll give him another go with the camera when I get back from work

i know your going for a dirtier look but as a deathwing player myself i really feel they need to have that bone white colour to them. Although from what i can see it looks fairly well painted

"Fenris breeds Heroes like a bar breeds drunks - Loud, Proud and Spoiling for a fight"

"It is my Sacred Duty to save your soul from the Dark Gods of Chaos...and i will save your soul even if you die in the process"

If you're vewing it, why not comment it

Thanks! The reason why i'm lung for the dirty look is that Deathwing Terminators are routinely cleaning ot space hulks, killing the fallen and what not and so it makes sense that their armour would reflect that.

i too would recommend thinner highlight lines as they're taking up way too much surface area as well as being too stark of a difference in color. thin highlights are a problem for me too and the reason i only occasionally do them (also because i do them too thick and then have to go over *again* with the original color to thin them).

i'd also recommend working first on just the regular painting techniques. this might sound a bit mean (and i'm by no means an expert painter like MrTom) but i think you need to work a bit more on staying inbetween "the lines" on the model. you've got paint bleeding over from the main armor onto the scrolls and the iron halo on his hump. are you using a small fine detail brush and thinning your paints? i've found an easy way to get close to detail without going over is to really thin the paints (i just dip the brush in water for a second after getting some paint on the tip) and then let the paint flow next to the surface instead of brushing in too close.

I agree that the highlights are too thick and too harsh. Find a good #2 flat bush and use the edge of it for your highlights. It should give you a very crisp line.

Secondly, I think you should spend more time on these. You didn't achieve the worn/dirty look, IMO. What I see is a brownish-grey basecoat, not the marks of hard fighting (e.g., chipped paint, scuff marks, soot on weapons, dust, etc).

Thanks for all the input guys, I'm going to completely strip this guy then repaint him in the more classic Deathwing colours. I'm probably going to spend a lot more time in this guy this time and hopefully get a much better result!

Good god man thin your paints. Simply thinning your paints would make it look 20x better bro. Trying using a wet pallet, it will help TONS.

That's the spirit. Practice is the best way to get better. If you want to make a figure look battle damaged it's usually best to paint it pristine first then work on the damage afterwards as you'll achieve a much more realistic result. Thinning your paints is a very good way to improve the ease with which you can apply it to small areas to create the effects you're after. Keep at it.

Can I suggest skipping forward 10 years to the age where you don't really care about what people say on the internet. Studies show that it decreases your anger about life in general by 37%. - Flashman
