Subject: Leadership Test vs. Morale Check?
|
 |
Slaanesh Veteran Marine with Tentacles

Hey all, I regularly face both Tyranids and Necrons on the battlefield, and I had a question about some interpretations of rules.
There was a huge stink on the forums a while back about the Doom of Malan'tai and whether or not its Spirit Leech worked on Fearless units, on account of the fact that it's worded as a 'Leadership Test' and not a 'Morale Check'. Did anyone ever reach a consensus on that?
If the Spirti Leech works on Fearless units, doesn't this also mean that the Flayed Ones visage rule would also work on Fearless units? It's worded the same way, after all.
Thanks!

Yes, it works on Fearless units. Fearless units only autmoatically pass Morale and Pinning checks, which are a *subset* of Leadership checks.

well according to the tourney judges i have talked to a leadership test is a stat test,
all fearless states is that the unit is assumed to pass all morale and pinning tests.
as for the flayed ones on pg 17 of the necron codex it states that units that auto pass morale tests are assumed to auto pass the horrifying visage.
with it just make sure you read the wording very carefully.

I checked page 17 of the codex and it doesn't mention that at all... The rule states (in its entirety):
Terrifying Visage. Units in close combat with the Flayed Ones must take a Leadership test at the start of each round of combat. If they fail they then for that round they may hit the flayed ones on a roll of a 6 regardless of WS.
As you can see, it doesn't mention Fearless or Stubborn at all, hence the contention here.

What version of the Necron Codex do you have?
Just like the wordings of Living Metal is different, the wording of TV might also be.

Yeah, you've got the old version of the codex. The current version says that units immune to Morale tests ignore this rule.

Just so you know shelegelah: The Deceiver's "dread" rule was changed in the same manner as Terrifying Visage: fearless units are exempt.

As a general rule, though, Nos and nsdoc were correct- Fearless units auto-pass Morale and Pinning, not all LD tests.
All Pinning and Morale Tests are Leadership tests, but not all Leadership tests are Pinning or Morale Tests.
