My friend and I decided to get together and play a small 1000 point game to test out the new Dark Eldar rules.

His Army (not exact here):
Deathleaper
Warrior Prime
Warrior Brood (4) - heavily upgraded, spore pod
Termagaunts (10) - Assault 3 guns, spore pod
Termagaunts (10) - Assault 3 guns, spore pod
Trygon

My Army (not exact here):
Archon - electrocorrosive whip, combat drugs, shadowfield, soul trap, djin blade
Haemonculus - crucible of malediction, venom blade
Wracks (10)
Warriors (10) - blaster
in Raider - Nightshields, Flickerfield, Splinter Racks
Wyches (10) - hydra gauntlets (2), hekatrix w/ pw
Beastmasters (4) - agoniser
with 6 Razorwing Flocks and 5 Khymerae
Chronos - fully upgraded

I won for deployment and first turn. We played one objective a side, with pitched deployment. I deployed mine right on the edge, Beastmaster unit acting as screen for Wyches, Chronos. Raider with Warriors off to one flank. Haemonculus deployed with the Wyches, so did the Archon. Wracks began near my objective. His objective was in the centre of the table. He deployed Deathleaper in some cover, reduced my Archon to Ld 9, and put the rest in reserve. My whole army was clumped together.

Turn one - Tyranids
He stole the initiative, and did nothing.

Turn one - Dark Eldar
I moved my Raider far from my army, and took a shot at the Deathleaper. Found out you half nightfighting distance against him, so wasted shot. I moved my wracks to hold the objective and then spread the rest of my army out. Moved the Haemonculus into the Wrack unit, leaving his pain point behind. Rolled +1S for Combat Drugs.

Turn two - Tyranids
All but one of his Termagaunt units came down from the skies. Warriors and Termagaunts popped up near my Wyches and Wracks. Trygon scattered into my Wracks, so was placed 1" away from them. The pods whipped out with tentacles, and combined with the Gaunts they brought down the Wracks to 4. The Warriors and Trygon shot at the Wyches, but Feel no Pain meant they only lost one. Archon took a shadowfield save to protect a wych. Rolled a 2. Phew. Deathleaper vanished. Wracks failed their Ld check and No Retreat! died.

Turn two - Dark Eldar
The Raider moved to claim the centre objective, and shot at the Trygon with its Dark Lance. 1 Wound. The blaster did the same. 2 Wounds. Beastmasters moved near the Trygon to assault. The Chronos blundered through the trees to flame and blast the gaunts. His flamer weapon killed three. His blast scattered and wounded a spore pod and killed a gaunt. Pain point to the Wyches, and to himself. He charged the Gaunts. The wyches moved up to the warrior squad and pistolled them inefficiently. 0 wounds. They charged, with Furious Charge and S4. Combat was as it could be expected. The Chronos tore through the Gaunts, giving the Beastmasters a Pain point. The Beastmasters left the Trygon on 1 wound from Razorwing attacks, but lost combat by losing three Beastmasters and a Khymerae. The agoniser was useless. And the S5 Wyches and Archon cut down all but two Warriors and the Prime. Electrocorrosive whip meant they couldn't even hurt the Wyches in return. I still lost one Wych. Through No Retreat saves, another two Gaunts died, and the Warriors were down to one Warrior and the Prime.

Turn three - Tyranids
The last gaunts turned up, and dropped next to my Raider, supported by Deathleaper. He missed the Raider, but the Gaunts shot it down. Flickerfield did nothing. We weren't sure about the rules of Immobilising a skimmer that moved at Combat speed, so we just said it was destroyed. Warriors piled out to surround the objective. Combat was as expected again: Trygon died to a single Razorwing wound. Wyches tore apart the last Warriors and the Prime. Chronos finished off the gaunts.

We ended the game at this point, since there was a clear victor.

In summation: MvP was probably the Wych squad, but without the Chronos giving them a much-needed Pain Point, along with the Haemonculus, they would have died to shooting, and wouldn't have been about to wound the warriors. +1S Drugs combined with Furious Charge probably won me that game. So it was more the Chronos, Wych, Haemonculus combination. This is definitely a combo I will be using again. I just love the Chronos so much! And he works so well with the Wyches.

Do you mean the Wracks failed their leadership and were 'Trapped' and died? No retreat implies combat resolution wounds.

A vehicle that is immobilized is only destroyed if it moved 'flat out' in the previous movement phase.

Interesting report overall, my impression has always been 'nids would do well against DE.

Yeah, they were trapped between spore pods, warriors, gaunts, rocks and wyches. What's the rule on that? Can they still run any direction, if possible? And can they run through your own troops?

The exact meaning of the rule has been debated. Some people take it as any move away from their own board edge constitutes doubling back, some people say they need to be completely surrounded.

They certainly cannot move within 1" of enemy models and need to be able to fit their base between gaps in friendly units to flee.

deathleaper is bound by the same rules as lictors and cannot deploy...sadly his creepy self must wait in reserves.

The "Trapped" rule has been clarified in the Rulebook FAQ. You literally have to surround the entire unit, etc. As long as they have a corridor to escape from they can fall back in any direction that allows them move away.

I have a quick question. How can one make a Chronos pain engine model. I run a wych cult as well, and I figured the Chronos would help my force out.

Armies:
4000+
2000
125 Khador
1500 Beastmen

W/L/D
14/11/10
4/1/3

As there is no model for it yet you have to sort something out yourself. I expect most people will be using an existing Talos model.

There's a link in my signature to my Dark Eldar force painting blog. I have my scratch-built Chronos in there. If you want to know how I made it, just ask in there or PM me. I've also seen a few other nice Chronos models around the place, usually using Tyranid parts.

Thanks Painnen, I'll have to let my friend know about that Deathleaper rule. And thanks CaptKaruthors, that'll help. Though this is the first time it's actually come up in play for us.

Personally, I converted my talos/cronos from wraithlords.

But that's just me...

Nice batrep!

Yeah, I was tempted to make a Scorpion Talos from a Wraithlord, using the Reaver Jetbike to give it 'antigrav thrusters'. But with a Talos/Chronos kit fabled for later this year (and I believe 'fabled' is the word to use with anything to do with Haemonculi) I don't want to waste the conversion.
