Digging through the SM codex, what would be the advantage of taking HG against a CS?

I know either can only be associated with their respective HQ choices (Captain/Commander), but at almost the same cost, on one side we get 3 Marines with 2+ save and power weapons, limit ten models, on the other we get FNP and lots of options, but limited to 5 models.

I looked at all sorts of crazy builds, like a 10 man HG with relic blades (pricey and probably not very effective) and 10 men with AGL - which sounds kind of "meh" but all sorts of fun against some armies (though also not that effective).

The CS, on the other hand (would be fun to have them at 10 limit, all with Storm Bolters), can have up to 4 flamers/meltas/etc, or up to four power weapons, or even both!

Looking through what each can get, what do you use/recommend, and what do you think would be a fun build?

neither is really that good, but I think a command squad with 2xPlasma and 2xMelta in a rhino could be pretty decent. Something for higher point games where your FOC is full up and you want more special weapons, imo.

So I take it that the Honour Guard isn't that competitive? I thought about fielding them with a Chaplain and a Commander in a LRC - would be a huge point-sink but they'd be able to take down pratically anything, right?

I have seen the honour guard plus Calgar and a chappy in a LRC at ARD BOYZ but I haven't seen them in ANY other tournament! I do however see the command squad quite often, in lots of different variations! I see them in pods, razorbacks and bikes mostly. I think the best way is either on bikes or in a pod armed with 4 meltaguns and a couple other equipment options.

I tend to only see the Bike Command squad, taken twice in biker lists. They provide mobile cover and an assault screen for the rest of the army.

Honor Guards are a point sink, and have no access to invul saves making them only ok at fighting many things. Terminators of either flavor are better most of the time.
