On Forgeworld, the new land raider achilles says it's an option for codex: space marines. But since it's forgeworld is this only for apoc, or can someone play it in a regular 40k game (obviously without agreeing to use of apoc formations/units)?

Yes, you can use it in non-apocalypse games. FW is NOT about Apocalypse only stuff.

There are a number of threads o nthis topic (using FW rules in normal games) - have a look, there was one a couple of days ago.

Be warned, some people will not even allow that thing in Apoc games. It's seriosuly just wrong.

I'm asking specifically for the Necron Tomb Stalker my buddy wants to play.
it's slightly different, because it only has "experimental rules" which I'm not sure if it makes it fully legal.
Still it seems like most of the monstrosities on FW are made over powered for the sake of sales, which comes across as gutless pandering...
That's just speculation though. Anyone have an answer for the Stalker?

There is no answer for the Stalker just like there is no answer for any of their models. Forgeworld can write anything they want, and they will, because it sometimes helps sales. Most of their rules are decent to underpowered, a few rare ones are just crap.

Experimental, approved, whatever: your local group or the tournament TO has to make the call.

"Most" of the models in FW are underpowered / over costed.

Seriously, there are 3 or so units that are worth anything. Lucius drop pod, deathwind drop pods, achilles and...thats about it. And the lucius is more broken.

The TS is actually pretty fairly pointed and costed.

To be frank, I may just be a bit jaded about apoc in general, and thusly my issues with FW be that they service apoc considerably more than GW proper. One of my first games, a guy sets a shadowsword or whatever the big IG tank is, and after turns of it ignoring shot after shot, I find it's legally unplayable in a standard game
If you folks think the stalker is fairly pointed then I think I will let my homie use it.
Conversely, does anyone think it too Draconian that if a (different) friend wishes to play a LR: Achilles, and I consent, but require him to use the proper forgeworld model, as opposed to proxy land raider?
As always thank you to those of you who wish to enlighten my ignorance. I'm still fairly new.

I definately think its a must that you own the FW model if you actually want to use it. The whole idea behind FW is "you loved the model, so here you go, some rules that allow you to actually use it" and proxying FW models clashes very much with that way of thinking.

Saddened on behalf of all the Ultramarines, Salamanders and White Scars players who got their Codex rolled into Codex: Black Templars.

just remember that the achilles rules that were published were trial rules and reportedly changed now that the official unit is in imperial armour X badab II. it's gone up in price and down in protection a bit. if someone does allow you to use it, do them the courtesy of using the real rules instead of the now defunct trial ones.

The way a friend and I fixed the Achilles in our group, drop the invulnerable rule and give it assault ramps instead for the same price.

Point blank meltas and thundercannon with usually a command squad inside.

For the specific Tomb Stalker, its a decently priced unit. Toughness 7 is a bit high buts its necron so it makes sence. It's a beast in close combat but no invuln save is the major weakness. The normal missile spam can bring it down just as fast as a Trygon. A winged demon prince that gets a charge has a fair chance of taking it down. Any walker had better stay clear though.

Hallowed - well, Super Heavies arent allowed in a normal FOC, so putting a shadowsword down is not really "on" - you're not playing a normal game of 40k there!

-Gorlack: Agreed.
-Warboss: Did they change the rules from the ones they link you to on the item?
-Nos: Ya I get that now. Fortunately now that I've had some experience under my belt I make him pay for those shenanigans.
And yes greg, I know you're reading this. I've had more than my fair share of wins for how long I've played in comparison.

Yes, as IA 10 is out which has the "real" rules - normally the website rules are either experimental rules, which they gather feedback on before publishing ina book, or they are for a book which is outdated so they have updated them on the website.
