So, I am reading the rules and want to put together a 1500pt Mordor army. I have no clue where to start, so I just tossed this randomness together.

Common:

Captain, Drummer, Shields, Banner
[250]

Mostly, it is models I like.

Anyhow, please Dakka, lead me in the right direction. Not mandatory to be competitive, but winning is always good.

You have too many trolls IMO; I would cut the # of trolls to 2, even 1, they would die down quickly if your opponent just decides to shoot all of their archers at them. There isn't much variation in troop type; I would spend the 375pts you have on allies on some harder hitting infantry. Maybe throw in a siege bow/catapult in there?

Ditto about the trolls, I think 2 would be plenty. (If you are going to take more, make one a Chieftan and run them as an offensive hammer.) Use your points for another Epic Hero or two. Another Ringwraith would not hurt. Wraiths are one-trick ponies, but the right trick in the right place is a game-winner. When in doubt, take the Betrayer, 'cause rerolls are always good. Gothmog is a great choice, and he has Overlord. I don't have much experience using the other Mordor Epics, though a friend of mine likes the Mouth of Sauron.

Also, it just doesn't feel like a Mordor army without at least one giant 9-company formation of orcs. Yeah, they're a pain to paint, but they give you a solid unit that can take a huge amount of punishment and frankly cannot be ignored.

My personal feelings are that Orcs should always have taskmasters. Infantry of any type doesn't get much benefit from musicians, while cavalry should always take musicians if possible.

Overall, not a bad army to start with. Twelve companies of Wargs gives you some flexibility: two units of 6, three units of 4, or four units of 3. At resilience 2, even small units sometimes have surprising staying power.

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

The two factors I consider in building a list for WOTR are the aesthetics of the models and the play style of the list. Thus, if you like the models and how they play then it is a good list for you.

I do not think that four trolls is too many. I have found that such units are more effective when you take them in numbers. Sure one or two may die, but the other ones will wreck face. Also the sheer hitting power of several trolls charging a unit is awesome.

I hesitate to give advice about competitive gaming in WOTR as the game is broken because of things like counsellor and magic. However, if you want your list to be 'more effective' then I would drop the captains, drummers, and banners from the Morannon orcs. In general, more bodies are better than unit upgrades. Ringwraiths are super good, but they are best fielded in a unit rather than mounted on a fellbeast. All of this being said, the game is broken, so you may as well play what you like.
