Yeah this list is none Mech.
Most of the games I play are either against Orks, Tau or some marine variant.
I haven't the room for storing Rhinos (with a full battle company it isn't easy, among other armies!)

Anything that can be suggested as a refinement (other than Rhinos...) would be welcome

I'd take out the Assault Marines, as they'll just advance way ahead and get killed, unless that's what that's what they're there to do. Not sure what to replace them with though. Otherwise, it looks fine for a foot-sloggers list.

I tend to use them in a reserve roll.

More to back up the tactical squads when anything tries to steal home objectives etc.

I have thought about removing them, but again not sure what to replace them with.

Maybe Sternguard...

Cool!

Interesting take on marines. I've seen it done very well with space wolves, but it was done with Njal to protect everything with the giant snowflake. The abundance of cover saves is what made the list so durable, and you should strive for the same thing. For starters upgrade to either a MotF or Lysander for bolster terrain (3+ saves all around) or downgrade to a generic librarian. Null zone is the greatest, and if you're using static shooting you could actually try and drop the vortex. GoI could also be great for some last minute objective nabbing. Force dome could be useful for protecting key too, so you've got lots of options. I'd take the libraryman.

Get rid of the command squad. They work best on bikes, or in a land raider. You're asking to get blown off the table by heavy weapons because they'll have nothing better to shoot at, and thats when FnP goes out the window. If you want a close combat support unit take assault terminators. Tactical ones could work with and still provide some fire support, but they suffer in close combat (they're asking to get beatdown by something with lots of attacks or power attacks). The exception: Lysander. Bolter drill and 10 tactical terminators with 2 CML throws down a horrific amount of anti-hoard fire. If you're taking Lysander, highly recommend you take the squad...it may be around 450 points before lysander but it's well worth it.

4 Tactical squads is a wonderful start, just make sure they've all got missile launchers. MM's on tacs aren't great unless you're taking Vulkan, and even then you're losing a ton of range for an AP1 missile until they get in 12 inches, at which point it won't matter whether or not you pop the transport.

The assault squad has to go. Even as an emergency response force they're not too too effective, most dedicated assault units will waste you. Even if you win you'll get ground down so far they'll be so ineffective that they'll become a speed-bump rather then an intercept force.

Dev squads aren't great. For 20 points more you can take 2 5-man sternguard squads with 2 missiles each. These can double-function as your intercept units if you beef them out, get the sarge a weapon, and take some combi-weapons. Flamers or plasma I suppose, or meltas so you can melt and charge what spills out of transports.

What about something like this...

Librarian -- 100

10 Tactical Marines - Missile, Flamer, Power Fist -- 195
10 Tactical Marines - Missile, Flamer, Power Fist -- 195
10 Tactical Marines - Missile, Flamer, Power Fist -- 195
10 Tactical Marines - Missile, Flamer, Power Fist -- 195

10 Sternguard - 2 Missiles, 5 Combi-Melta, Power Fist -- 310
10 Sternguard - 2 Missiles, 5 Combi-Melta, Power Fist -- 310

That's 1500 points, and keep in mind no one can tell you what will work. You've gotta play test and figure out what works for you!

Problem is it has over 3 years been built as a battle company, so I can only take what I have.
Exchanging the Assault squad but retaining fire power is what I am looking for.

The most games I play are against Tau, Orks. Rhino heavy SM who very often discover I outnumber them. as I am running with the assault squad 66 marines.

Money is an issue, so building 20 sternguard is next to impossible till I am in work realistically.
