Subject: Starship battles using Imperials, Orks and a host of random scratchbuilds! **Damnatio Memoriae**
Greetings Dakka Dakka-ites, my name is Jihad_Ragsta and I'm new to the forums. I've been lurking for ages and finally decided to register and make a contribution.
A little about me first - I've been into the hobby for nearl;y 16 years now, bar the occasional patch of lethargy. Currently I'm into tinkering with Battlefleet Gothic, I enjoy tweaking the models and scratchbuilding ships for myself.
SO I thought it might be good if I published a bunch of my finished and WIP stuff here - hopefully you guys may get some inspiration and bombard me with comments/ suggestions/ verbal abuse.
The two fleets I have are Battlegroup Crassus under the command of Fleet Admiral Theodor Angberg Crassus (puffs for breath) and the Bloodaxe mercenary flotilla that are Da BossKillaz under 'Killa' Gargruk.
Enought chatter! Pictures!
Arc Imperial, flagship of Admiral Crassus. The admiral is descendant from one of the noble trading houses that flex their financial muscle through shipping and mining cartels in the Eastern Fringe.
In recent times Crassus' flotilla was caught in the Tyranids' Shadow in the Warp. While trying to recover the group was ambushed by a Hive swarmfleet and sustained heavy losses. Confusion in the sector is already rife and now the admiral finds his calls for aid unanswered by fleet command. His astropaths are unpredictable and many of them are already dead or insane.
Comments and criticism very welcome, thanks for looking

Thanks, guys! Building Ork ships is great fun, it's really helped to reduce the size of my bitz box! Currently I'm working on a 1000 pt fleet for Da BossKillaz so will show some of those ships off soon.
For now its some old Ork stuff, I've actually sold them off since taking these photos.
A shot of my old collection of Kill Kroozers and Terrorships, plus the first Hammer class BC I made (out of a chunk of plastic barricade I found!)
My line squadron of Imperial cruisers: Torchbearer, Startiger and the Baron Kurgan

Thank you very much for the kind words, I'm glad the painting and converting has come across well. The Armageddon battlecruiser is a moderately converted Lunar class (it was tired and old so I killed it).
I really enjoyed building the Hammer class ships, Orks are really therapeutic when it comes to modelling! My latest project, as mentioned, is a fleet of Ork Bloodaxes that I'm building from terrain parts. I will post them here!
Also, I have scratchbuilt a grand cruiser and some light cruisers for my Imperials - I'll post them up, plus a little fluff, tomorrow for your insults and abuse

Citizens rejoice!! Glorious warships of the the God Emperor are even now entering your star system!! All families are to attend the nearest viewing gantries to witness His Eternal Majesty's most glorious servants in low orbit!!
The Exorcist Grand Cruiser 'Brandenberg' leaves planetary orbit for another patrol of the Halo Stars. The Exorcist was primarily used as a long range patrol vessel. Note the large capacity for attack craft and the secondary bridge. The Brandenberg is well known for its colonial transport duties over the last three centuries.
This ship came about from a random 1:72 scale Warrior APC kit I had lying around. I cut the hull in half length ways and that's what the vessel's main body is comprised of. The prow is made from a toy house from the Life boardgame
During the Third Armageddon War the light carrier I.N.S Daring did sterling service escorting convoys into the warzone around Armageddon. It is said by Imperial Navy sailors that their ships have 'souls'- if this is the case then the Daring has a distinctly impetuous spirit. Standard evasive manoeuvres suffer from sluggish thrusters and sudden course changes towards enemy forces, weapon turrets and lances have an impressive tendency towards accuracy and the Daring also possesses some of the most efficient reactors within her class, at least within Battlefleet Armageddon.
Commanded by Captain Ramos N'Kai, the Daring continues to perform good service keeping supply routes open. Her sleek hull has proven a welcome sight to many beleaguered freighter captains in these dark times.
Endeavour class light cruiser Hand of Erebus. Seriously damaged during the Battle of Pelucidar, the Erebus had extensive engine repairs and was reassigned to convoy escort duties and policing the fringe systems of the Armageddon sector. Her captain, Javier Varesh, bears the scars of Pelucidar as does his ship. Those who have served on the Hand of Erebus speak of strange dreams of a smouldering rage and resentment of the retreat from Pelucidar that lingers within the ship itself. This ship has been responsible for several commendable actions of ruthless efficiency against unarmed xenos and crippled pirate vessels.

No comments at all? Not even insults? Fair enough! I really like my scratchbuilds but perhaps you guys don't - some suggestions on where I'm going wrong would be appreciated.
Here's the Terrorship squadron I've done for Da BossKillaz:
I've built them from an Imex Chemical Plant kit - this thing was a godsend for $25, I could fleet hordes of Ork ships with it! Which is pretty much what I intend to do
My inspiration for these ships came from watching the Reavers in Serenity, right down the reactions of the bridge crew and the Reaver's attacking style *snigger snigger*

and awesome use of bioncle masks cool effigies of mork (or is it gork)
Everyone seems to love the Daring! It was my first really successful Imperial build, wanted to use up all those launch bays.
Busted on the bionicle heads! I found one in my bitz box and the rest is history - they're really handy considering how Orks love their vessels (and vehicles) to have faces. Oh it's definitely Mork... Or is it Gork? I think Mork may be more in keeping with Blood Axe philosophy.

Yes, mate, I think I know where you're coming from - they have been missing something. I think I'll paint the teef on the prows an off - yellow. I can add windows to make them more shiplike (right now they do just look like strange Ork totems) too. Probably bubonic brown or some other drab yellow tone so they aren't too bright.
Bit reluctant to do any dags or checkers but perhaps I should? Black and white areas of patterning maybe?
Here's some work in progress Ramships by the way, just to show you what's in the pipeline - the drills are some random screwheads I found on the street. I may try some painting ideas on these first, before I try them out on my kroozers.

It's been a while! My apologies for that - I have just finished a move to London and am now pretty settled in. Next week I should be able to bring all my hobby stuff down from Edinburgh - really looking forward to getting hold of it!
Thank you for all your comments - I am glad it's encouraging people to look at BFG! Your words are much appreciated
Thought you might like to see my merchant navy - all these ships came from GZG, which anyone who loves starships should look up! They have some really cool civvie ships.
I scratch built the grey and green one after an abortive attempt at making an Eradicator gun muzzle.
Can you see the Firefly? I might go back and redo its glowy bits to a blue colour instead. These ships need some windows and markings painted in but they look good enough for now I hope!

Thanks, Llamahead! I was inspired heavily by Ironhands and the excellent work on Easy E's scratchbuilding thread on Warseer. Looks like it's too late to join that competition even tho I would have liked to
The bulk of pieces used for my Orks come from one of the Imex Chemical Plant kits, including the engine nozzles. You can buy one from WarStore and eBay amongst other places. Google is your friend
I've based the whole fleet on this kit, check out all the pieces! Over 300 bits in one box and that was for £25 - the price of two Killkroozers from GW!! I'm using plasticard and pieces from my bitz box too.
Metal snips and brass wire for pinning the pieces, a selection of cutters and needle files for tidying them up. Just wanted to show you guys what I'm using so others can get an idea of how easy this is!

Thought I would show you guys some small Imperial scratchbuilds I did for escorts - 2 standard Swords but in the background there are 2 escort 'sloops.' Whatever, you get the idea!
Thoughts? They were fun to make but I dunno, not sure they're really my cup of tea.
I have been working on some Ork Ravager Attack Ships too! I'm trying to keep them close to the Reavers from Serenity:
Nearly finished, just need some panelling, rivets and a few more fins. Ideally I want racks of missiles sticking out of them but that can always be added later.
Oh yeah, and I have this in the pipeline too. Nothing special .....

Llamahead - It's eventually going to be a Hammer class battlecruiser, my friend. I need to add more layers of plasticard armour plate and some brass etch mesh too. While I really like it so far its one of my unluckiest vessels - it keeps breaking! More nails required Thank you for your comments!
Arklite - I'm glad you guys like the sloops! The engines are smoke launchers from IG tanks with plasticard fins. The hull is rectangular plasticard tubing with BFG Imperial antennas along their length to break up the outline. The prows are more plasticard with petrol cans underneath (!). I cannibalised a 1:72 Warrior APC kit for the bridges and general detailing. Does that help?
SO I have made some progress on my Imperial fleet - currently working on 4 more cruisers, 3 of which will comprise my "Big Red One" squadron. I'll fluff them up so that they represent a squadron of Navy warships that features in Imperial propaganda for the masses. And red wunz go fasta too. Plus I might have been fed up with painting grey...
And I also managed to put the finishing touches to a large squadron of light cruisers! Incidentally, all my cruisers have names sooo....
Fine Chance, Foehammer, Molochian and His Grace. Plus two Cobras - I'm working on fleshing them out cos who doesn't love torpedoes?
Thanks for looking, hope the pics inspire you to scratchbuild and paint BFG!!

Subject: Re:Ragsta's Battlefleet Gothic Menagerie - Orks and Imperials
Da Boss Killaz favour the use of torpedoes - inspired no doubt by the Imperial fleets they try to emulate. Ravager escort ships are popular and there are usually several in any formation. Note the camouflage and flame graffiti on these particular ships - this sets them apart from the drab colours of other escort types and reflects the favour of their Kaptinz.
They're done and I'm pretty darn pleased with them! While watching Hart's War last night I finished applying flames, camo and battle damage. The flames I left unmarked by damage or washes to keep them vibrant - I didn't want this squadron to fade as much as my Ramships do.
Next up I'll try to pull together another squadron of Ramships - I really need to order some scale link brass mesh before I attempt to finish my Hammer class.

Really appreciate your comments, wolfshadow, I'm rather surprised at how well the sloops have gone down! Maybe I need to build more escorts on a similar design philosophy... I love BFG and it is really easy to be creative with the ships, even Imperial ones. Something as simple as a custom bridge really works wonders!

Good grief, mate, thanks for all the kind words! I love your stuff so that means alot to me. I'm glad you're inspired - scratchbuilding is great fun for Orks! I really tried hard to give them some ugly 'faces' as that was in keeping with the GW Orks ships that came out. I was inspired in a big way by the Ork fleet from Warhammer Monthly's Bloodquest. Once I'm back in Edinburgh we will have to play some games!
Farseer Petriel - Are you saying you would never put glue on your Bionicle heads? That's fair enough - I find them an easy 'cheat' to get effective Ork prows myself. Anything that makes things easier!
I have a squadron of Imperial cruisers coming up next - hopefully they'll be finished this weekend. After all the love for my sloops of war I may have to build some more of them (tho slightly different from the last as my bits box demands it).
Thank you for all the comments, everyone - hope to provoke you into building some ships yourself

RSJake - What?! Not reading my awesome thread in full?! How dare you, sir!
I will get some comparison shots up for you - don't have anything that would work right now though. The Ork kroozers measure just under 15 cms each and their escorts are twice the mass of an Imperial escort frigate. I'm assuming you've seen the BFG models before - sorry if that's not right! I actually really like how large my Ork pirates are in comparison to their Imperial equivalents - I think Ork warships would need more bulk (armour, engines and guns) just to match up against a human warship.
Speaking of human warships... I managed to churn out my squadron of line cruisers. INS Erwin Guternacht, Jericho's Chorus and the Marshall Vect
The formation of Guternacht Squadron, widely referred to as the Big Red One, was used by the Imperial propaganda machine as an exercise to rally the masses of civilians across the entire Infernis sub sector.
It is estimated that over a million Imperial citizens were granted the privilige of full time employment in building and refurbishing this squadron of line cruisers. After several intercessions by Fleet Command these numbers were boosted by the population of Penal Colony 170D/AE51.
Completed 3 years ahead of schedule, the Big Red One features in several long running propaganda serials - lots are frequently cast by planetary populations for the honour of joining their crews (these are not voluntary).
The squadron's recent interdiction into Tau space, headed by the battlecruiser Apostle of Fire, has enjoyed number 1 holo vid rankings on three major worlds.

Part of what motivates me in building Ork ships is my bitz box - we have a hate/hate relationship. As such I am determined to use up as many random pieces as possible!
I have taken some Ork totems I was building and used them for the prows on these. The bulk of parts come from the chemical plant set as usual. I'm going to add some wire mesh to the 'wings' to make them look slightly less flimsy. Also need to mount some small guns/ antennas to the prows for a bit of detail. Seeing as these ships have a habit of exploding rather quickly I won't be taking too much time on them.
It's not much but I like them so far - that will give me 3 squadrons of Ramships and each one of them look distinctive. I imagine a different Mek will have inspired the construction of each squadron.
Suggestions and criticisms very much appreciated!
Thanks for looking

Thank you, kind sir! Alot of my inspiration actually comes from space ships I grew up watching - the Ravenork was based upon a Klingon Bird of Prey.
As mentioned previously I am also inspired by the Reavers out of Serenity - I would say at least two of my Terrorships and a squadron of Rams came from there. I used to love playing a game called Homeworld and I hope to base another squadron of Rams on the Junkyard Dawg from that.
I also have a Kill Kroozer in the pipeline that will be based upon the starship Enterprise! I have some pieces here that I'm looking forward to using for that one...

I notice that the Waaagghh Dakka has no fleet support yet
monkeytroll wrote:Nice use of bits on these latest rams. Might I suggest a boarding tunnel/spike/screw type affair coming from the hole above the prow-faces?
Thanks for the suggestion! I was thinking about what to do with those holes myself - I'm now building some boarding 'spikes' out of tube and BFG Imperial antennas. It's VERY fiddly work. And to think I'm doing this a single hit point escort.... I will post up some progress shots once my brass etch stuff gets here.

Inspired by monkeytroll's suggestion I sat down and built some boarding spikes for my squadron of Ramships. I've also taken delivery of some brass etched mesh and panels so I added a little to the wings and hulls for some detail.
At one point I was bashing my head off the desk at the frustration of building such fiddly pieces!! The spikes are made from BFG Imperial antennas (I LOVE these bits - you can use them for guns, torpedoes, boarding spikes... ) and some plasticard tube.
I will be painting the squadron red and boltgun. I will hold off from posting another update until I have my Hammer BC upgraded for you - don't want this thread getting boring with constant shots of escorts

Thanks, mate! I love the Dark Crystal, you have good taste in signatures! It all started when I found a random bionicle head and added it to the scratchbuild you've quoted here - the effect was so simple and effective I immediately bought a bag of them off eBay. At some point I'd like to make some escorts out of the heads alone but that's rather far in the future.
Ork Ramships - also referred to as Rams, Rammers, Ramboyz and Jamboyz by Ork crews. The term Jamboys probably comes from the mess these ships make of the enemy (but more often themselves) when they manage to make contact with the enemy.
This particular squadron of Ramships has a different design aesthetic to others seen within the fleet of Killa Gargruk - the 'wings' are probably for flamboyant style. Imperial Navy analysts are bemused by the boarding spikes mounted above the prows - surely any close range engagement where boarding would come into play would be brutally cut short when the ship itself rams the enemy.
Ork Hammer Battlecruiser coming up next! After that I'll be taking a holiday from my Ork builds to recharge the brain cells I have a supply of brass etched plates and mesh to detail up the Hammer so I'm looking forward to getting it finished - it's been semi - complete for months
I doubt this log will go silent though - I have 16 Imperial escorts to paint up in the meantime, plus I may have something else coming in the post that a buddy has hinted at

Recently my laptop melted, I lost my bank card during a night out on squig beer and my job has leeched my will to live (and therefore hobby). Happily, things are much better now (I don't live in a warzone for starters and I have all my limbs, so maybe I should suck it up and get hobbying).
Now that the holiday season looms I really want to wrap up some of my projects so I can do some new stuff. This involves the following:
Completing ALL my Imperial Navy models and bringing the fleet up to 4000pts inc. commander.
Completing ALL my Ork Pirates and raising them to 1500pts inc. commander.
What does this leave me to do?
Imperials
4 Sword frigates (BUT they won't be GW models, oh no... And I ain't saying what they'll be either).
Scratch built Vengeance Grand Cruiser for my flagship (my fleet fluff isn't big on battleships - they prefer larger numbers of less capable vessels).
Orks
2 Onslaught attack ships (just a little somethin' somethin' to hide behind the big ships and snipe at any flanking enemy escorts).
Hammer battlecruiser (it's finally built and ready to be painted!!!!).
In the mean time, here are some Imperial escorts for your enjoyment - I tried squadron markings on the Cobras for the first time (I fear freehand) and it really improved the look. On the flip side, I tried Orgyn Flesk over Mechrite Red for my Firestorms and it dried all glossy. Yuck, but nothing so ugly as to make me wanna change it.
Thanks for looking guys, any suggestions for the Vengeance or Onslaughts gratefully received, as is any comment or insult!

Started work on the Onslaughts last night - I have a large bitz box of Imperial weapons so that's where the bulk of my pieces came from.
Initially, I was going to give each one a cluster of engines but then I found the muzzle from a Demolisher and thought why? All the other escorts have multiples and Orks thrive on being different! So one large thruster each.
I'll be adding the pictured Ork shield bosses to the sides to break up the blank spaces and give them some identity. I will will be adding some antenna vertically to represent more guns (and more importantly break up all those smooth lines - not very Orky at present). I will also add a few rivets to break it up some more.
I'm thinking I'll paint these ones red like the kroozer prows, except with some yellow dags if possible. Do they need anything else? The engine tubes will be broken up with plating and some pipes...

I think I had an advantage in that BFG ships are quite easy to paint. I'm still really pleased knowing that I currently have no Imperial forces left to paint! One reason for so much success must have been all those escorts.
Here are some photos of the completed ships. Photograph four is a close up of my counts as Swords - they are Soryllian frigates from Firestorm Armada and I really like them!
Sorry about the pics - no daylight BUT I was champing at the bit to get these guys posted up. My photography setup in general is not good - I live in a boxroom so I have very little scope for a light box or multiple table lamps etc
I welcome any comments, suggestions or criticisms - this is the second wave for my Imperial Navy and they represent a major boost in numbers for me. There is a subtle improvement in paintjobs but they should still mesh fine with my older lads.

I shall keep an eye on you for when your willpower finally buckles then
Answer - I use a few small blobs of super glue on the area I want the brass mesh to go, then I place it down with a pair of tweezers. I then blow gently on the mesh so the glue spreads out and doesn't obscure the detail of the mesh. A few gentle squeezes with the tweezers help to secure the piece - this is tricky as the glue tries to stick the tweezers down!
Hope that helps, mate.

Hammer is shaping up nicely, I second the yellow dags.
Thank you! Yes, I have now decided that ALL of the Ork capital ships are going to get yellow dags. I have already daggified the Hammer and its attendant escorts. Pictures below!

Thanks, buddy, ever the loyal supporter As I said, I will definitely add dags to all the cruisers.
One of my recent projects was bulking out my Ork pirate fleet, and with the addition of a final 2 escorts I am happy to say this project is now complete !

Hammer class battlecruiser Juggamork and two escort ships

This is likely to be the last update for this log - I am going to be putting everything in to the more general log that my Marine thread has become. Light quality for these photos is not that good, so apologies for that. I am very pleased that I can call these guys done for now. Actually, I want to go back over them and add weathering powders and windows but I'm rather worried about taking the plunge... Here is what I am thinking of using to weather them:
Thank you, monkeytroll! I'm pleased that you like them - they do fit in well with the rest of the fleet. Ironic, as the fleet is now so large it won't fit on it's old shelf!
My other log has new shinies too y'know...

Hahaha sorry had to be done! I have left this thread dormant for far too long, for which I apologise. The bulk of my recent work has been zombies and marines on my other thread but I have recently gathered pace on my Ork Waaargghh Fleet!
Here are some snaps of the 3 builds I am aiming to complete shortly. Ravager, Kill Kroozer and my latest build - a rather large Terrorship! Should I be using the BFG Ork Pirate list this will bring my fleet to it's full quota of 6 cruisers. I also have my Hammer Heavy Kroozer for fun and games of course, plus my long intended battleship is next on the To Do List
Recently played a Surprise Attack against Scarper's Imperial ships. Next time I will take some shots for these pages, but needless to say my small posse of ships caused a nuisance of themselves, only to be ultimately pulverised by the many Imperial weapon batteries around them. I went for a fluffy fleet of numerous escort ships backed up by two Kill roozers - in hindsight I think more cruiser hulls is the way to go for actually gaining victory... But I do love my fluff
In other news - recently treated myself to some counts as Klingons from Studio Bergstrom:
My picture does not do the cruiser justice - it is very nice indeed! I think it's emulating a D7 Klingon cruiser - the two brass rods bracing its 'neck' are rather odd but not that bad in the flesh - they certainly give it extra strength. For your reference, the ships are on a cutting mat using 1cm squares. The smaller ships will be my destroyers and frigates - they are just too cute not to be used.
