Hey,
Although the title may be a little bit misleading, I was talking about the future of 40k as a game.
What are your opinions? Will it be around for another 20 years? Or 40 years?
Will it be able to compete against videogames and such?
So let me hear what you think.
Thanks,
Loner

I'd say it has a fairly healthy outlook. They're doing well considering the sales of all the licensed properties like Dawn of War, and still holding on pretty well despite the global recession. GW specific stores close down pretty often, but they also open up new ones regularly so who knows. The game will compete against videogames as well as it does now, as they're distinct from one another. I know I'm happy to have both hobbies.

Who can say? It has been around for a long time and weathered the downturn in gaming and rise of mmo's to some extent but it can be killed just as easily as anything else by poor economic factors or the new kid on the block. I'm hoping it sticks around because I've been involved with it for over 20 years in one form or another and I love the fluff (despite its frequent changes). In my opinion, it is still the best thing out there. There may be some rules that play better or some companies that make better minis. But, it's the background that draws me into this game. If the setting doesn't interest me then the game won't either. So, here's hoping for another 20 years of vague rules and expensive plastic!

I think it'll never be more prevalent than it is right now. It's a nerdy cult hobby, and to me, that's just fine. I like being different.
As for video games, no. Most people want to entertain themselves in ways that do not require them to think, and we wargamers are those who just aren't sated by that.
I think if GW keeps raising prices it'll die. Hopefully when the economy is a little more stable they'll lower 'em a bit (fingers crossed).

I Personaly think it's gonna go one of two ways
1) GW are going to do something right , and when i say right i don't just mean lower prices ors something similar but launch something big , that creates a real lift in the market similar to wotr , and they will enjoy somewhat of a Renaissance .
2)they get out done , a new kid comes along and people finaly take stock and up sticsk and gw will die on it's arse, bloated and expensive from years of treatign it's consume base like trash.
or i could be completely wrong

I think it will be around for a long time yet. 40K is a rich and interesting world that captures a lot of people's imaginations, and GW has been keeping it afloat for a very long time. People complain a lot about prices and all, but GW products have always been expensive and people have always gone back to them.
I think there will be more competition in the future, with new companies turning up and all, but I don't think that will kill off 40K. Even if GW goes bust (which I doubt will happen any time soon), I suspect people will continue to play the game on their own, either using old models or raiding new lines for parts.

If I had to guess it'll still be about in 20 years, though not in the form we know it now. Maybe a smaller number of players supported by GW, maybe even as a fan supported game only.
To my mind it'll depend on how well GW work to support a supply of new gamers while, at the same time, maintaining the interest of the longer time gamers by ensuring they can keep playing without having to update every 4-5 years... or at least ensuing that those changes don't lave 80% of the players out in the cold for years before their unit specific rules catch up.
40 years.... that's anyone's guess.

Very true. Although, the continued release of new stuff is always nice, if it went belly up I would still keep using what I have. I can imagine the community would still exist and probably take the reigns as far as clarifying and updating rules.

With a hobby like this I don't think it could ever truly die off. The game is so driven by its players. The universe is as vast and expansive as ours. Long time fans will always continue playing even if GW does go bankrupt (impossible.)

Depends,
a few years ago it was run by gamers for gamers and life was sweet
more recently it has been run by accountants for profits and life has been a bit worse
now with the new style FAQ's maybe they want to put profits second and customers first?

You'd be surprised of how many people here have played or know of 40k, but have rarely or never played video games (they're not old-timers either). It's the same with Card Games. Trading card games, especially the likes of Magic, Pokemon and Yugioh, are really popular, even with actual video game versions of the card games (dont know about Magic, but there are several Yugioh ones, including a virtual mmo style one, as well as at least one Pokemon Card Video Game).
Gamesworkshop, however, seems to have slowly moved away from Canada. We lost our Games day and a good few Hobby centers closed down, and we didnt have that many to begin with.

Yeah, they'll be around for a while. And if they lower prices, we'll buy even more (Because there's no way I'm spending $62.00 on a Valk).
