Starting up a game a few weeks ago, the question arose about points value. When setting up a game at 2000 points, we figured that the defenders points value represented the garrison of the fortress, while the attackers points value represented a small splinter of the invasionary force assaulting the fort, and the amount the commander could requistion at that given point. So, my question is this, how do you represent points value in games(not with models!), and do points values actually have a stated representation?

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

The points value is mostly for game balance. In reality a Guard Commander is probably going to try and flatten the enemy with more tanks than the enemy has human (or alien) bodies.

Fluff-wise, points represent the amount of forces you have available when you are forced to engage the enemy.
Game-wise, points represent the amount of forces you have available when you are forced to engage the enemy.
But, it's purely for game balance. In fluff, the Imperium should crush anyone if they launch an offensive campaign.

There is no representation fluff wise for points. Points are just that, points. Its a game balance mechanic. Fluffwise, two forces are never perfectly matched against each other, GW kinda gets around this by explaining your average game as a small segment of a much larger battle, where the two sides just so happen to be an equal match. Apparently, most people wouldn't find the game very fun if one side vastly overpowered another.

There are some modifications though, like giving attackers more points or returning their fallen as reserves. However that is usually due to the rules favouring the defenders, making it necessary to balance out the points more than for fluff reasons.
