Just started getting into 40k these past couple of months. I decided to go ork simply based on the fluff and how the pplaystyle seems to go.

With that in mind here's my first 500 points. Please let me know how it looks and what I may improve on since this is my first list

HQ: big mek with kff - 85 pts
Troops:
20 shoota boyz (1 nob w/pk and boss pole) 160 pts
20 shoota boyz (1 nob w/pk and boss pole) 160 pts

2 deffkoptas 1 w/ buzzsaw - 95 pts

500 pts total

Excellent, a good way to start!

Also, try this list using the boyz with sluggas & choppas (it'll cost the same) and see how that works for ya.

Shootas = extra shots in shooting phase
Slugga & Choppa = extra attacks in assault phase

Another thought - at this point level ya may not need the Buzzsaw on your kopta... try taking it off and using the points to give both koptas twin-linked rokkit launchas.
Yes your firing at BS 2, but it is TL and still capable of anti-tank! Plus you'll have 5 points to spare to put towards something else... say 'eavy armor for your Big Mek!

Enjoy, and let us know how your Waaagh turns out!

Isn't a deffcopta with buzzsaw 70 pts? How can a vanilla copta be 25 points?

I'm a big fan of buzzcoptas but think that a 75 pts squad of lootas will fair more consistent.

Without the codex in front of me (I'm at work) If I remember, the koptas are 35 pts each (vanilla) and 25pts to add the buzzsaw. Giving a total of 95 points for both koptas and only 1 with the buzzsaw.

I'm mainly using the koptas because I just bought the AoBR set and those are in it, and have a limited budget to work with. I will probably go with the above and instead, set 'em up with TL rokkits for anti tank capability.

Pretty sure a vanilla kopta is 45 plus 25 point saw is 70. Almost positive.

Either way. Run the koptas as two seperate units to avoid them running off the table if one gets killed.

I may be using an outdated codex (not sure which one I have ATM) -- is there more than 1 codex that has a difference in point costs for the koptas?

I just tried looking at other peoples armies lists and noticed they put 70 points for a buzzcopta. It could be the codex you are looking at. I will double check

I'm wondering if those points costs are due to them taking TL Rokkits and Buzzsaw as the TL Rokkits are 10 pts and the Buzzsaw is 25 added to the 35 for the vanilla kopta bringing it to 70. -- Again, I'm not 100% sure though as this is all fairly new to me.

Yeppers, common kamakaze buzzkopta set up is the Kopta (35pts), TL Rokkits (10pts), & buzzsaw (25pts) = 70pts

Scout up with turbo boost (max 24") before turn 1, move up to 12" on turn one, fire rokkits at tank in shooting phase (ya may pop it there), then assault it (max 6" move) with the buzzsaw (vs rear armor) on the assault phase.
You've now moved up to a max of 42" on turn 1 and blown up a tank! Enjoy!

Note this is not recomended vs Land Raiders

Out of curiosity, what is the benefit from using Shootas? The Choppa/Slugga combo sounds like it could be better since the assault phase is where Orks shine -- If I want to move into assault ASAP, avoiding the shooting phase and running into assault sounds like it would negate the benefit of the shootas.

Thoughts?

The benefits of the shootas, as bigmeklover said, is that when you are running the whole way accross the field, its better to be firing twice as many shots during that period, than having 1 extra attack per ork in cc.

If you are running at the enemy for 2 turns, have that many more shots could really do more than what you could do in CC... maybe.
