Basically, I don't...

Don't get me wrong I understand what there for, rapidly delivering a strike force quickly and in one peice to as far into enemy lines as you would like to put them, for that I am eternally grateful. My confusion lies in the fact I played at the time of rhino rushes where it was perfectly permissable to leap out of ones rhino and charge the nearest poor sod. Obviously its been a while since you could do that, and Drop Pod rules forbid it anyway.

Ive got 2 potential ways of using them as far as I see.

Drop a unit consisting of 6 Grey Hunters w/Mark of the Wulfen, Power weapon and my WGBL with TH/SS behind enemy lines, pray they survive 1 turn of shooting intact and then charge.
Drop a unit consisting of 10 Grey Hunters w/2 Plasmaguns close enough to start piling on the firepower the minute they drop in.

To put some perspective on this im talking from a small game (500 Points) PoV.

I really can't help you with a point level like that, as I mainly play at 1750. What I can do, however, is tell you what the Drop Pod does in bigger games. Just keep in mind that not all units are good at smaller point levels, and that the drop pod may or may not be one of those units.

In bigger games, the point of the Drop Pod is basically, as you've already noted, to get people into the enemy lines intact. One of the most common uses for pods is to drop some kind of unit armed with melta weapons close to an enemy armoured threat that needs to die and turn it (hopefully) into a pile of smoking junk. This becomes even more effective when the unit with the melta is a Dreadnought of some kind, as the opponent then has to either kill the dreadnought, diverting offensive power from the rest of your army, or ignore the dreadnought, which means that it goes berserk in the enemy lines, probably leading to loads of kills.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

you are playing at 500 points and have points for a transport that is completely immobile?

under 1k, it isn't worth it to have Drop Pods. take Rhinos instead. they can move meaning they can contest objectives for you and can hid in a kill point game.

if you are going to use Drop Pods play bigger games where they really are useful.

smaller games you need to use Rhinos.

Using both, its for the first game of an old group of mine, we all moved away from gaming due to college and uni, were getting together this year for a returning game since were all moving back to the same area, I picked up a SW battleforce and had an old rhino left over, hence using the drop pod that came in the box.

In that case, you would be best to get a Dreadnought with a Multi-Melta to drop in. it can come down and kill a tank and hopefully survive the return fire.
