Hi guys,

Dragged a few friends back into 40k and very soon they will have 750pt armies ready to play so trying to come up with a space marine army to face theirs.

HQ
Captain ~ 100pts

Troops
10x Tactical Marines ~ 210pts
- Flamer, Missile Launcher, TL HB Razorback

10x Tactical Marines ~ 215pts
- Meltagun, Missile Launcher, TL HB Razorback

Elites ~ 125pts
Dreadnought
-2x TL AC

Heavy Support
Predator ~ 85pts
-HB Sponsons

Total 735 pts

Question is where to spend those extra 15 pts and I am not sure what HQ to take? I was thinking LC in one of the tactical squads because I know I will be facing a leman russ demolisher and possible a landraider and look at their lists I don't see how I am going to get close enough to use melta weaponry?

I guess the deafault standard librarian is probably the HQ i Should use. Any advice guys?

If you're going to face that heavy armour I'd encourage you to bring some better anti-tank, in my opinion Attack Bikes with multi-meltas are the way to go, you could erase the dreadnought and save that for higher points games and add a pair of MM attack bikes.

Also when it comes to cheap HQs I'd recommend Chaplain Cassius, he's a great all-around HQ that cannot be insta-killed for 125 points, these two changes would bring your army to the same total cost as it already is... For the last 15 pts I dunno, I don't think lascannons are the right way to counter leman russes and land raiders, because str 9 against armour 14 doesn't give you a good chance and an infantry mounted lascannons won't ever get to take shots at side/rear armour. I'd probably take a power sword for the sergeant in the flamer tactical squad.

Here. No...here.

Get rid of the dread, spend the points on a command squad. Believe me, your captain will appreciate feel no pain...

Welcome back to the game! Here're some pointers I've got for you. I'll go item by item.

Like you said, if you're going with just the base Captain in this list, you might want to consider a Librarian instead. Even without an Epistolary, they're very powerful still, and add a lot of other elements to the game.

As for which powers to take, Avenger is probably one of the better shooting attacks he can have. You don't have a lot of AP 2 or 1 fire power, so Null Zone would probably not be as good a choice as it tends to be. In this case, I would say Might of the Ancients would probably be your next best choice. Against Mech Guard, you'll easily wound their infantry and destroy their vehicles, and against MEQ, well... you can pretty much do the same to them as well.

Great start to your basic Troop choices. I take it that you intend to Combat Squad, and separate the Heavy Weapon from the Specialists and Sgt's. (My personal favorite strategy ). If you know you're facing MEQ's, I would consider getting a Power Weapon at the very least. Against GEQ's, you can get away without one, but not so much against MEQ players. Putting the 15 free points you have into a Power Weapon would be a viable choice, or a Lascannon and an additional Meltagun would be a good choice as well.

I personally like the CCW on Dreadnoughts a lot. A Power Fist striking at Init 4 would ward off many squads from getting too close to it. I would take a Plasma Cannon, and replace the Storm Bolter with a Heavy Flamer. The points add up to 125 also, but now you're capable of long range Anti-Infantry and are decently proficient in CC.

Predator ~ 85pts

Classic Dakka Pred. Good choice, just try to remember to keep it somewhere where it can see most of the board.

All in all, it's not a bad list. At 750 points, it's not as easy to make lists good at being an All Comers List, but with what you have, it should put up a decent game. Good luck!

PS - Great handle, btw. I'm a big fan of the Ultramarine novels, and am on the last part of the Omnibus. Have you read all of Graham McNeill's books?

Don't take a command squad, they're over-priced for what they do. If he wants something to roll with, get assault terminators. Honestly you're better off with something other then the captain. Cassius isn't a bad option, but for an all-round low point character you should probably get a librarian. The powers are just too good to pass up because we've still got the best power: null zone. Gate, vortex, avenger, force dome and machine curse are all great as well, and having a force weapon always helps.

The list looks like it puts a whole lot of dakka down range, but I'm not a fan of getting razorbacks with tactical squads. If you're intending to expand into razorspam then you're playing the wrong codex. The forced combat squading is terrible in kill point missions, or you lose your shell because you can't cram 10 men inside it. I'd swap them out for rhinos, and upgrade your flamer to a meltagun.

I can see why you'd want the razor at low points so that your HQ has somewhere to ride, but if you're intending on combat squadding no matter what and running the razorbacks into enemy lines then you're better off with the rhino. Plus you can shoot vortex/avenger/machine curse out of the rhino with your meltagun (assuming you didn't move/moved 6, depending on the power).

Welcome back.

A librarian is a must at any game under 1000pts. They're just superb value for money, something which is VERY important at this points level. Plus machine curse will keep that Russ from firing all game.

I'm in love with the Rifleman dreadnought but I'm just not sure it does enough in your list (against the armies you mentioned anyway).

I would go with the list below, by dropping the dreadnought you can max out everything else properly.

100 - Librarian (Avenger and Machine Curse / Might)

170 - (10) Marines w. Melter + ML + Power Weapon
75 - Razorback w. LC&TLPG

170 - (10) Marines w. Melter + ML + Power Weapon
75 - Razorback w. LC&TLPG

120 - Predator w. Lascannon Sponsons

Just my opinion on it.

Ga.

Its just a game kids.

FYI - You're a bit off on your point totals here. A full 10 man squad with a Meltagun and Power Weapon will add up to 190, not 170. It's a decent loadout, but your totals were just off.
