So long as they make sense and have the appropriate equipment on them. I use the old cadians as my conscripts. Also I know a lot of models have bigger bases now.

I have seen the old lazy boy destroyers in a tournament before. I wouldn't think there would be any problems.

My entire Marine and IG armies are almost completely RT era models. Never had a problem, and they've been to multiple GW US and Canada GTs (back in the days when we had them) and I have no idea how many non-GW events.

sometimes it can be a bit aggrevating though... Most armies i have no problem, and even congratulate the person on having the older models, though some of the early sculpts can be a big fugly.

My main beef is old style carnifexes etc that were tiny compared to the current one. One of the players at our local flgs has several new fexes, but always takes his tinyfexes to tournament. They can practically get a cover save from ripper bases, and gaunts can 1/2 obscure them easily, but they still count as fexes for the heavy guns they carry to shoot back.. thankfully the days of the sniperfex are gone, but i'll bet that they are now the teeniest T-fexes out there..

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

In all honesty I like the look of Older destroyers and I can see where its a cheap tactic to use smaller models to get cover

My SM are half RT models (OOP).
My Rhinos ARE ALL RT models.

My eldar guardians are half RT models (OOP).
My IG use RT (OOP) plastics as regular troops and 2nd ed models also.

Haven't had any issues apart from a single opponent (who was younger than these models) questioning their validity. A simple "Sure, kid. These are older than you are, look up the stuff of legends when you get home if you doubt me." was enough. He even came up to me the next day and apologised.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

I am willing to bet that the tyranid red terror is now out of production, but they still have a few models kicking around. It makes a dead sexy replacement to the current raveners, which I am not that keen on.

The other thing you will observe is that the old tyranid hive tyrant (Im thinking 3rd edition codex/first half of 4th edition), the one that looked like a massive tyranid warrior, is also out of print, and yet, GW does not offer a model for the Tyranid Prime role (a HUGE error on their part, they could continue selling an old/dead model with repackaging).

The only stipulation that fascist GW tournaments have is that A.) most of the model is GW or sister product and B.) WYSIWYG holds true.

Also, here is the other detail about tournaments/playing GW games, and that is that models must come on the bases they are supplied with. I was glared at/stared down for fielding old terminators who fit on the small bases, for fairly obvious reasons. I was not called out on it. I've not been to any tournaments in a while now so I can't tell you whether they changed that to indicate the Current base sizes.

edit was spelling error and some formatting

It doesn't matter how bloody far the apple falls from the tree. If the apple fell off of a Granny Smith, that apple is going to grow into a Granny bloody Smith. The only difference is whether that apple grows in the shade of the tree it fell from.

as long as the model is a GW product and is on the base it came with you are 100% legal.

But it's often more aesthetically pleasing to re-base for consistency on the current base, and also conveniently avoids confusing players who've never seen the old ones.
